it was amazing
bookshelves: 2022, classic, book-a-book-club, young-adult

I finally got to this classic book and it did not disappoint. For years I have wanted to read it with many of my friends and family having read it back in elementary/middle school and talking about how good it is. It is well written, flows well, and takes the reader on a series of emotional highs and lows. When it is over you will be satisfyingly exhausted (and maybe crying).

The only place I could see this story being a problem for some readers is that it is very much a period piece. Set in rural early 1900s America, it could prove difficult to connect to. If you think this could be a show stopper, proceed with caution. But, if it is something that you can work around, there is a lot to love here.

Another important part of this book is dogs and a boy’s love for his dogs. I am not much of a dog person, but I was still able to enjoy this book. If you are a dog person, I think you will connect with it even more!

If you have had this book on your to read list for a long time like I did, maybe now is the time to check it out!

BAM doesn’t answer to her real name I want to say this is one of the books the American troops received in special care packages but they were tiny pocket sized. When Books Went to War by Molly guptill manning. It’s such a moving book for any nonfiction reader. I’m almost positive this is one of the books that got passed around a lot

I can see how this book would help some American troops think of home even though it is from America almost 100 years ago. It has the feel of a hot bowl of chicken soup.

Jonathan Absolutely bawled and I mean bawled when we read this for middle school and then watched the movie in English Lit. Powerful novel.

Yes! This along with Old Yeller and Charlotte’s Web will keep the tears flowing. I should look for the movie version of this.

Audrey I had to read it in elementary school and was bored to tears. Probably too young to enjoy it but not sure I'd like it any better now.

It is hard to say . . . I was not bored at all but my kids have told me they are bored of stuff that I think is awesome. So, maybe it would be a different experience for you now??? I dunno.

LIsa Noell "Rocking the Chutzpah! Matthew, I'm so glad that you finally discovered this book! It's such a special book for so many people. I've probably read it 15 to 20 times. I was just a kid who ended up broken. As a broken child, this book spoke.to me. Those damned coon hounds! They were magnificent!

LIsa Noell "Rocking the Chutzpah! Have you read Island of the Blue Dolphins?
