it was amazing
bookshelves: 2020, audio, mystery, library, hoopla, suspense, classic

Classic and so good! I am glad I finally read this.

I am familiar with Sherlock Holmes, but I am not sure I have ever actually read any of the books. Throughout my life, I have seen many Holmes movies and various pop culture references, so it is all kind of mashed together in my head. By reading The Hound of the Baskervilles I now know with 100% certainty that I have read a Holmes book.

And . . . it seems like it was a great place to start!

Sometimes when reading classic mysteries, they get kind of muddled and confusing for me. When reading Agatha Christie, I often have to go back over sections to clear things up or when I get to the resolution, I will find I missed something. This has also happened for me when watching the Downey, Jr. Holmes movies. But, thankfully, this was not an issue for me with the Hound of the Baskervilles. The mystery is interesting, easy to follow, and progresses nicely. It has lots of the Holmes tropes that anyone with even a passive interest in Holmes would know about. All in all, a very satisfying experience.

Looking to start your Holmes journey? I think starting here would be "Elementary"!😁😁😁

Michael Smith I love this series! Also his Lost World is a fantastic dinosaur adventure!!!

Matin Pyron I'm currently reading the story
I think it's going to be perfectly 😌
Scary though 😬

Wulf Krueger Yes, "The Hound of the Baskervilles" is probably the perfect introduction to Holmes.

At least, it served pretty well for me when I found one of the first German editions from 1907 hidden in my mother's library more than 40 years ago.

It was printed in Gothic type (I thought it was some adult code, though!), I couldn't yet read (but was hard to discourage) and since it was hidden (in an actual secret compartment, I kid you not!), I was pretty sure I was not supposed to know about it.

Could it get more irresistable?

That's how I learned to read - and to love Sherlock Holmes.

Of course, now - my mother passed away a few years ago - those wonderful and literally (sic!) life-changing early editions are in my personal library in a spot of honour.

Happy new year, Matthew!

Glad you enjoy it, Michael! I forgot he wrote The Lost World, too.

Alex This is my favourite Sherlock Holmes especially because of the eerie setting. Glad you started the Sherlock Holmes journey with the best! Happy New Year wishes Matthew.

Chris Oh you must read more of Sherlock! This is probably one of his most famous stories.

Awesome, Matin! I hope you enjoy!

Kandice You should definitely read more! Might there be any on your TBR shelf for Book a Book? *hint, hint*

That is a great story, Wulf! What an awesome way to get into reading and Sherlock Holmes!

Happy New Year to you as well!

Thanks, Alex! Agreed - a great way to start my journey!

Happy New Year to you as well!

I am looking forward to it - I am curious as to which ones are considered must read and which are considered duds (if any)

Sadly, I don't own any physical copies of any Holmes books so it is not likely to make it into the mix this year if I hold to my resolution.

But . . . I will keep it in mind! :)

There are no duds, I'd say. The one story you should definitely read as well is "A Study in Scarlet", I think.

Since you could (somewhat) stomach James Joyce, you'll have no issues working your way through the original Holmes stories. ;-)

Thanks for the rec - and I am pleased to hear that it will be difficult to find duds! :)

Leila I have seen the film but not read the book Matthew. My overall favourite book written by A.C .Doyle has always been "The Lost World" which I borrowed from the library years ago and found it fascinating. so watched that film too.

Second time The Lost World has been mentioned in the comments. I might have to check that one out, soon!
