Everyone should read this book. It's not perfect and there are some minor flaws in story and writing style/viewpoint - - but they don't take away from the overall wonder and admirable optimism of the novel.
Also, for maximum appreciation readers need to discover the findings/revelations at the same time that Ryland Grace does. It enhances the sense of wonder and appreciation. For that reason, I'm going to be really stingy about sharing any plot details. Just read the thing.
This is the perfect introduction to modern science fiction for someone who wants to explore the genre for the first time. PROJECT HAIL MARY reminded me of the feelings I experienced when discovering science fiction at the school library during eighth grade. I gobbled up Asimov, then Heinlein, Sturgeon, Silverberg, etc. I haven't experienced that same sense of awe and wonder until now. I love that feeling.
Some of the things I especially appreciate:
1) The easy-going writing style interspersed with humor.
2) The gradual set-up/introduction of the plot/conflict. It's a journey of discovery for the reader as well as the main character.
3) The way that Weir mixes in the science in a way that the man-on-the-street can understand.
What I like most is that Ryland Grace is a science nerd, which makes it easier for the writer to break down the tech/science so it is more understandable. Also, being a nerd means he gets excited over this stuff which transfers to the reader. Well done.
4) The back cover synopsis describes PROJECT HAIL MARY as a "tale of discovery, speculation, and survival" . . . and it delivers. Add to that human ingenuity, persistence, friendship with foreigners (and how!), and blind optimism.
