Im Herzen des Imperiums (Teixcalaan, #1)

Die Protagonistin Mahit Dzmare kommt als Botschafterin des unabhängigen Außenposten Lsel in das Zentrum des Teixcalaanichen Imperiums.
Lsel ist eine Bergbaustation, die Bevölkerung lebt also auf einer Raumstation. Ich hatte daher sofort eine zumindest grobe Vorstellung von den Lselanern und ihrer Kultur.
Teixcalaan ist nun aber ein ganz anderes Kaliber. Ich benötigte mehrere Dutzen Seiten, um überhaupt zu begreifen, was vor sich geht. Fast genauso lange dauerte es, bis mir klar wurde, dass es sich auch bei den Teixcalaanern um eine humanoide Bevölkerung handelt.
Die Autorin entlässt uns also ohne jedes Vorwissen ins Imperium und wir als Leser müssen uns noch mühsamer als Mahit einen Bedeutungsrahmen erarbeiten. Ich finde grandios, wie die Autorin auf diese Weise den Eindruck des völlig Fremden vermittelt hat.
Sehr gefallen hat mir auch, dass sexuelle Präferenzen nicht mal eine Erwähnung wert sind, weil sie außerhalb der persönlichen Beziehung keine Rolle spielen und auf Teixcalaan das Geschlecht des Sexualpartners möglicherweise vollkommen unbedeutend ist.
Dafür, dass es in diesem Roman in erster Linie um Politik und Poesie geht, ist er bemerkenswert unterhaltsam. Der Autorin ist hier wirklich etwas Außergewöhnliches gelungen und das Buch ist die zahlreichen Buchpreisnominierungen, die es erhalten hat, auf jeden Fall wert.
Ich bin schon sehr gespannt auf Teil 2 der Reihe.

The protagonist Mahit Dzmare comes to the heart of the Teixcalaanichen Empire as the ambassador of the independent outpost Lsel.
Lsel is a mining station, so the population lives on a space station. So I immediately had at least a rough idea of the Lselans and their culture.
But Teixcalaan is a completely different caliber. It took me dozens of pages to even grasp what was going on. It took me almost as long to realize that the Teixcalaans are also a humanoid population.
The author releases us into the empire without any prior knowledge and we as readers have to work out a meaning framework even more laboriously than Mahit. I think it's great how the author conveyed the impression of complete alienness in this way.
I also really liked the fact that sexual preferences aren't even worth mentioning because they don't play a role outside of the personal relationship and on Teixcalaan the gender of the sexual partner may not matter at all.
For a novel that is primarily about politics and poetry, it is remarkably entertaining. The author has really done something extraordinary here and the book is definitely worth the numerous book award nominations it has received.
I'm really looking forward to part 2 of the series.
