Sea of Tranquility

Emily St. John Mandel's books always bend my mind and this one is no exception. Informed by our current pandemic but set in the past and future, it plays with time travel and has more of a sci-fi feel than her other books. I loved revisiting some of the characters of her previous novels but wish she had gone deeper with Olive and Gaspery. Although I enjoyed every page of this beautifully written novel, I missed the complexity and messiness of The Glass Hotel.

Oooh, I hope my hold becomes available quickly! Glad you enjoyed it, Lisa.... I haven't read "The Glass Hotel" because it seemed so different from "Station Eleven". Which of the two, if not both, are some of the characters in this one from? I'm wondering if I should read TGH first.

Which of the two, if not both, a..."Mirella from Station Eleven, which I barely remember, is also in both subsequent novels. Plus Paul, in TGH and SOT. No need to read the Glass Hotel first. You'll find it just as interesting to read afterwards if you wish.
Great review, Lisa. Happy to see this one was satisfactory, though perhaps not as much as the author's previous book.
I just got TGH, and am really excited to read it! It’s interesting and neat that she has incorporated characters across her novels!
I had a library loan of this but returned it, because I'm just not in the headspace to truly appreciate it right now. I'm saving it for another time when I can savor it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it, Lisa!
I’m with you on Olive and Gaspery, Lisa. I find that Mandel’s books always give so much but yet still leave me wanting something they didn’t provide. Love her work.
