first five star of 2024.
i would like to apologize to all of the dinners i ruined with friends, my boyfriend, family, and other loved ones because i could not stop talking about the brilliant, dark, vibe-ruining concept of this book.
this was my first toni morrison, my first new favorite of the year, and the first time in a long time i've been completely dumbstruck while reading.
beautifully written, cleverly constructed, populated with unforgettable moments and characters.
i don't know what to say!
bottom line: a book that makes me speechless. a nearly impossible feat.

I've read The Bluest Eye by her and it was one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking books that I've ever read. (It was for an English class, and it prompted a lot of conversation around racial inequality and body image.)

that sounds like a very rewarding class!!!

We read this in high school and its one of those books you read and your questioning everything, like wait is this real. When we discussed this in class, it would be so funny when we discussed the going ones of the book while at the same time you would weep from the tragedies going on.
What an intro to Toni Morrison, emma! I reread this not long ago, and it really made a lasting impression.
Read it myself for the first time at the end of 2022, had the exact same reaction! I couldn't put it down as I was making my way through it. Literary fiction at its best.
This book changed my life. It really ties into the grief I feel as an adoptee and it's like so dark, I also ruined dinner parties by bringing up this book. It's the best.
