I loved The Glass Hotel, and it was one of my top books of 2020.

This one is more speculative fiction, and not for me. If I’m not sure by 41% what is happening and why, then it’s time to call it and move on to another book.

message 6: by NZLisaM (new) - added it

NZLisaM Here’s hoping your next read is 5 stars Jan.

Margaret M - (too far behind to catch up although trying to spend more time on GR) At 41% you did right to give up because if it hasn’t picked up by then. It’s a massive No. Hope you enjoy the next one 💜

message 8: by Michael (new)

Michael David (on hiatus) Hope your next read is much better, Jan! 🤞

message 9: by Diane (new)

Diane Wallace Uh oh...and another honest insight, Jan!

message 10: by Marialyce (new) - added it

Marialyce You have to know when to quit a book that is holding little appeal. Onto better, Jan!

message 11: by NILTON (new)

NILTON TEIXEIRA I agree. If at 40% I’m still feeling numb then it’s time to quit. I had this one in my hands last week, from the library, but I sent it back, as I was not in the mood for it. I will definitely give it a try, although I wasn’t a fan of The Glass Hotel. But first I must read Station Eleven, which had been sitting on my shelves since its release (I have “scheduled” to read it before the end of this month).

Sujoya - theoverbookedbibliophile (recovering from an arm injury; on a short review-writing break) Hope your next read is more satisfying!

message 13: by Holly (new)

Holly B (slower pace!) I didn't enjoy Glass Hotel, so easy skip for me! Sorry is disappointed.

Jenna ❤ ❀ ❤ Sorry you didn't enjoy this one, Jan, but it's good to know when to throw in the towel and move on to something you like.

*TUDOR^QUEEN* Hope you enjoy your next read! 😘👸

message 16: by Catherine (new) - added it

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - so very behind! That genre is always tough! I hope I can get into this one, but better to move on if it’s not working for you. Good luck with your next Jan! 💕

message 17: by Allison (new)

Allison Faught Oh no! Sorry it was a dud, Jan! Best of luck on your next read! 💞

message 18: by Gabrielle (new)

Gabrielle Grosbety Sometimes it's best just to move on when a read isn't working, glad you can move forward and hopefully find a much better read that'll fit what you're looking for better!

Dorie - Cats&Books :) Thanks for the heads up Jan, they have been pushing this book so much, glad I didn't download it :)

Angela M is taking a break. Thanks for your honest thoughts, always,Jan . Sorry it didn’t work for you. I loved Station Eleven . If I read another by her I’ll try Glass Hotel.

Melissa (Trying to Catch Up) Oh well, at least you gave it a good shot.

message 22: by Lori (new) - added it

Lori Keeton Oh no! I'm not a a huge speculative fiction lover either, so this one may be a no go for me.

Andrew Smith Sorry to see that this one didn’t work for you. Better luck with your next book.

Rayrumtum I felt that way too, but I continued to the end. The 2nd half picked up.

message 25: by Yun (new)

Yun What a bummer. I have this on my tbr, but I'm going to keep my expectations very low. I hated Station Eleven lol.

message 26: by Debbie (new) - added it

Debbie Damn, hate when I hit a DNF! Hope your next is better. I haven’t tried this author yet. I definitely won’t start with this one! Great review!

message 27: by Carol (new)

Carol I loved The Glass Hotel also, but suspected that this one was "more speculative fiction." Thanks for the confirmation. Jan.

PorshaJo Sorry you didn't like this one Jan! I just finished it and say initially it was a bit rocky for me, but I stuck with it and loved it. Had I not loved this authors others reads, I might have DNF it earlier. Hope your next read is better.

Her books are hot or miss for me. I did not enjoy Station Eleven, loved The Glass Hotel, and this was a miss. Maybe it's timing? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thanks for your comment!

I surprised even myself by how much I loved TGH. I hope you do too!

Dorie - Cats&Books :) wrote: "Thanks for the heads up Jan, they have been pushing this book so much, glad I didn't download it :)"

I got mine from the library, lol. Having liked one and not cared for another I didn't; want to request it either.

Gabrielle wrote: "Sometimes it's best just to move on when a read isn't working, glad you can move forward and hopefully find a much better read that'll fit what you're looking for better!"

Thank you so much. This has been a rough reading year :(

Allison wrote: "Oh no! Sorry it was a dud, Jan! Best of luck on your next read! 💞"

Thanks Allison!

Sometimes it works for me and other times not, so it's always worth a try! Thanks Catherine!

We agree on Station Eleven! I hope you have better luck with this one :)

Rayrumtum wrote: "I felt that way too, but I continued to the end. The 2nd half picked up."

Ah, maybe I gave up too soon? Hmmm, maybe I'll try again later. Thanks!

Andrew wrote: "Sorry to see that this one didn’t work for you. Better luck with your next book."

Thanks so much Andrew!

You never know, but if you try it I hope you love it. Thanks Lori!

I think so too! Thanks Melissa!

Maybe I gave up too soon, but like you, the only reason I stuck it out to 41% was because I loved her last book. Maybe I'll try again one day? Thanks PorshaJo. I'm going to look for your review!

Carol wrote: "I loved The Glass Hotel also, but suspected that this one was "more speculative fiction." Thanks for the confirmation. Jan."

It does seems to be her niche and if I hadn't loved her last book I probably would have passed on this too.

Debbie wrote: "Damn, hate when I hit a DNF! Hope your next is better. I haven’t tried this author yet. I definitely won’t start with this one! Great review!"

So many dnf's this year! Or 2 star reads. 2022 has not been a good year for books for me :( Thanks Debbie.

Tina Dear Jan I've been listening to this on Audio but I think I will send it back. It's really not for me and I just keep listening. I'm starting to let go easier and easier but it still hurts me. LOL. Are these stories all time travellers? I don't know, perhaps I'm missing something but I'm not being entertained.

Honestly, I'm not sure, I was so confused! lol

Think of dnf'ing as a way of freeing up time for a book you will actually enjoy! It's freeing! Not every book os for every reader. It's often not the book, it simply isn't for everyone (no book is!)

message 37: by Tina (new)

Tina You are so right! Thanks for that thought. It's helpful!

message 38: by Theresa (new)

Theresa Alan I'm sorry this didn't work out for you. Thanks for the review!

Donna Weber ( Recuperating from Surgery) I’m so glad I read your thoughts on this book, Jan! Ironically, I am at exactly 41% in the book…and I couldn’t agree more about it being speculative fiction. I have kept trying to be invested in this book, but it’s just not happening for me either! Sorry it was a dnf, for you Jan. I don’t like doing it either, but I’m dnf at the same 41%! I wish I read your review sooner, I would have dnf much earlier! Here’s hoping the next one is better! Btw, I love what Tina just said, as far as thinking of dnf’ing as a way of freeing up time for a book you’ll actually enjoy! Thanks for your honest thoughts, Jan!

Good for you! There's no shame in dnf'ing. Not every book will be for every reader and that's OK!

I hope you moved onto something you loved!
