it was amazing
bookshelves: non-ya, nonfiction, recommend, beautifully-written, owned, 5-stars, favorites-2022, reviewed
Read 2 times. Last read August 30, 2022.

periodically, i have to check to see if i still dislike poetry. for character development.

unfortunately, this has had, in this case, an unforeseen side effect: THIS TIME, I DID.

i read this last month (okay, two months ago, what about it i’m terribly behind) and i felt this sneaky sinking feeling i should 5 star it. but not to worry, because i’m doing this new totally normal not at all deranged thing where if i want to give a book 5 stars, i have to reread it before i review it.

so usually i am reading said book twice in one month.

like i said - normal stuff.

so i read this again. it’s still a 5.

this is prose poetry, which in this case means a tiny little book divided into number paragraphs of stunning writing, not only doable for me but pretty ideal. generally it’s my favorite kind of book: lovely turns of phrase, filled with beautiful explorations of what it is to be human / to hurt / to feel / to love.

throw in a bunch of fun facts and interesting topics and observations about sex and i’m in love.

bottom line: i never in a million years expected to say this but…kind of a dream!

Nada Ashraf I do this too 😂😂 I almost always feel nothing when reading poetry

message 4: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin i loathe poetry. The modern it is, the worse it gets. Just waffle and 'deeeeeeep, man'

message 5: by Ray (new) - added it

Ray Nessly As Leon in Curb Your Enthusiasm might say, "I fuckin love poetry. I could tap that ass." Pls. forgive Leon, he can get a tad crude, yes, but in spirit, he's onto something here. But Leon doesn't have it entirely "right" either. Like anything else, it depends. But I believe anyone, who looks around a bit, will eventually find poetry that they can relate to.

i guess leon was right in my case!! this ruled

Lee✨ This is so brave! I feel like if I reread a book twice in one month I would never give it 5 stars

Mia I have to go searching for poetry I love. Modern poetry like Pillow Thoughts or anything by Michael Faudet, I’m appalled it’s allowed to be called poetry. But this is the age of insta poetry, which is extremely disappointing.

i can't stand the insta poetry

Mia There’s so much too. And people call it profound and life-changing, but just looking at snippets, I’m genuinely concerned about other peoples definitions of what constitutes as ‘good’ and ‘poetry’.

generally speaking i think books are soooo individual and i try to never judge anyone's taste but...ig poetry woof

Mia Yeah in regards to fiction barring a few exceptions, I generally say live and let live. People will like what they like, but poetry in this day and age… oof. I guess a couple of sentences slapped together is a poem.

Mia Sadly you’re not wrong. Modern poetry took a wrong turn somewhere, especially if people like Gabbie Hanna can be considered poets. Gotta love insta poetry where 15 words slapped together are a poem.

Johanna Instagram poetry is a tiny snippet of modern poetry, not the whole of it. I do enjoy some instagram poetry, there is nothing wrong with a quick thought in an aesthetically pleasing way in my opinion, it's a specific medium and has to be used a specific way. It's not all good or anywhere near good even, but that's true of the poetry of any time. I really recommend Ocean Vuong, Natalie Diaz, Kaveh Akbar or Tommy Pico if you want something with more meat on it. There are so many amazing collections published, nobody can possibly get to all of them. But instagram poetry is just a tiny sliver, in a very formatted medium.

message 20: by Johanna (new) - added it

Johanna Oh and Joy Harjo 😊 she was poet Laureate a few years ago, and our current poet Laureate is Ada Limon. Both are amazing authors. I noticed that you did read Ocean Vuong lol, I'm not surprised. He's so good, and popular for a reason.

message 21: by Emilly (new)

Emilly Have you read any Ocean Vuong? Your review reminded me how I felt about On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous.

thank you for this thoughtful response! while i hate instagram poetry i certainly know it is not representative of all or even most modern poetry

Emma Morris read The White Book by Han Kang!!!!!!! I loved this book, but I loved the white book more

message 37: by Scott (new)

Scott J Mulligan this review doesn’t make sense. “check to see if you still dislike poetry” and then you write, “this time I did” Then you proceed to give it 5 stars. How does this make sense? Thanks

message 38: by Scott (new)

Scott J Mulligan it should be in this case, i didn’t. implying you didn’t dislike poetry. Or in this case, i did like poetry to avoid the confusion
