“Family rivalries, incalculable wealth, and a prominent man dying in the arms of his beautiful mistress”
I have to own up to the fact that the genre characterization “romantic suspense” always gives me the heebie-jeebies. Call me a misogynist but I have this preconceived mental idea that the book I have in my hands is lowbrow chick lit and could not possibly be worth the reading. I’ve only read a few Sandra Brown novels but I also have to own up to the fact that I’ve been wrong every single time. And SMASH CUT is no exception.
A serial killer who has the rather bizarre MO of re-creating gory scenes and murders from his favorite movies with all of the requisite twists, turns, red herrings and suspense that you’d expect from the very best thrillers – what’s not to like? And the romance, well, it’s certainly there but even that comes with a surprising twist in the tale that can be characterized as interesting, creative, and heartwarming.
Note to self: Pick up your next Sandra Brown novel and tell yourself that, yes, it will be romantic suspense, but lose that idea of low-brow, unexciting chick lit! Sandra Brown is a winner.

Ha ha I had to laugh about romantic suspense giving you the heebie jeebies. I’m the same, but I have also enjoyed a couple of Sandra Brown thrillers!

Great review, but 'romantic suspense' is a new one on me. 😮 can't help wondering what it could be. Exactly?

Yeah, that's kinda my impression based on my general understanding of the genre as well. But that was precisely the point. Now re-read my review and it'll probably make more sense to you, LOL!

I have only been able to read one book by Sandra Brown so far and it was Rainwater which was very good. Most of her books I have to quit on. Rainwater by Sandra Brown
