it was ok

Not for me.
It seems as though so many people loved this, but I found it to be a bit of a slog.
The first few hours of the audiobook were so. incredibly. boring. I seriously do not care about any of the mundane nonsense (her uniform was too tight in the shoulders but made her stand up straighter) that played no part in the plot.

description

Maybe more importantly, I couldn't feel any of the terror that our heroine, Kit, felt as she entered the spooky murder house.
What the fuck even are you going on about, girl?
An old lady supposedly killed her family a million years ago. Said old lady now has use of one fucking hand that she uses to type words to you.
Why is Kit freaking out all of the time? If she were a teenager, maybe. But this is a grown-ass woman. Are you kidding me with this nonsense?
Oh no! I'm not sure if I want to know the truth!
What? Why not?

description

It may be that I'm just more curious than the average bear, but I would be all about hearing what happened on the night of this famous murder from the suspected murderer.
None of this wiffle-waffling for me, I'd settle right in and snuggle up with a presumed killer for that level of gossip.

description

Yes. Yes, I am.
And, not to brag, but that's probably why I'll end up the subject of a Netflix documentary at some point.

description

The conclusion to the mystery was over the top, but that honestly didn't bother me too much. It's a thriller, so you know that you are going to (hopefully) go on a bit of a wild ride when you picked the book up.

(view spoiler)

The epilogue was kind of insane, though.
And not really in a good way.

description

Alright. This has quite a few glowing reviews, so take mine with a grain of salt.
I think the problem is that the story relies too much on atmosphere and that just isn't the kind of book that hits with me.
It moved too slowly and I couldn't relate to the main character's fears.
Recommended for...someone else.

amy I’ll come back to this one after I’ve read it.💗

Katie Huggins I absolutely loved Final Girls & another one that has escaped my mind… but the last couple that I have read - I have similar sentiments and ratings.

Wulf Krueger I don't know what happened to Sager. I read and really liked a few of his earlier novels. Then came "Survive the Night" which was so ridiculously bad I didn't even think of reading his books again for a couple of years.

I wanted to give this one a chance but from your brilliant review it seems like his streak of writing bad books is still in full swing.

Hope you like it!

I liked Final Girls. I love the idea of that whole genre, in fact. That's the only other book by him that I've read, though.

Wow! I haven't read that one. Yeah, I'm not blown away by him at all. Yet? Maybe I'll try one of his early books.

Small mercies! ;)

I thought both Home Before Dark and The Last Time I Lied were rather decent.

Anne Thank you! I was wondering what books of his were the ones to read.

Jan I suffered the same fate, Anne.

We're twins!

But which one of us is the evil twin?

Southern Lady Reads (Crazy Busy-Will Catch Up!) I've seen a lot of hit or miss reviews for this one for sure!

message 12: by Anne (new) - rated it 2 stars

Anne It's not "terrible" it just isn't my speed.

message 13: by Rajan (new)

Rajan I look forward to your reviews. Hilarious

Ruxandra Grrr I would say this book is terrible, honestly, the writing sucks and the atmosphere I just didn't get at all. It just felt bland, for something that has so many twists and turns.

It seemed like so many people really loved this one, though. Surprised me! Like maybe it's a me thing? I learned over the years that I'm a reader who likes forward plot motion more than descriptions and "atmosphere".

Christine Koch RNBSN I was not a fan of this one either. I really felt like this one was written with a set of checklists forced on the writer and it really hurt the novel.

message 18: by Anne (new) - rated it 2 stars

Anne I just wasn't scared. At all. Very little tension until the end, and then it was ott. <--to me

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* I agree the books can be inconsistent with this author for me also

message 20: by Anne (new) - rated it 2 stars

Anne I've only ever read one other book of his, but I've not been 'wowed" yet. I may try one more time.

Christine Koch RNBSN I read 2 other books by Sager. Lock Every Door: pretty bland and very predictable. Home Before Dark: actual sustenance, and writing that engaged me and also my highest rated by him.

message 22: by Anne (new) - rated it 2 stars

Anne Ok, then I'll give Home Before Dark a peek and see if that's the one that will turn me into a Sager fan!

Callie I totally agree that it started off slow and Ricky being related to Kit was out of left field. I also thought it was even weirder that he went with the house as it fell like "dude, you didn't live there like how Lenora did, what are you doing committing basically suicide when you specifically told Victoria you moved on and had a good life?" I think what made me really like the book was the twist of the sisters because I didn't see that coming at all!

message 24: by Anne (new) - rated it 2 stars

Anne I liked the thing about the sisters, too. That was a good one.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* Yeah Riley Sager's books have been going downhill. You're the second meh review I've seen today on this one

message 26: by Anne (new) - rated it 2 stars

Anne Really?! Wow. I saw such good reviews for this one. It's why I decided to try it out. Oh welllll.
