A young Sherlockish genius solves the crimes in LA that fall through the cracks.
Isaiah Quintabe makes a name for himself helping people in his neighborhood, and the subsequent word of mouth leads to a high-profile rapper calling him in to figure out who is trying to kill him.
And while the crime itself is interesting, it's really Isaiah himself you end up wanting to know more about. He's an orphan who was being raised by his doting older brother until a terrible hit-and-run took his life. Still in high school, and unwilling to enter foster care, Isaiah managed to stay under the radar and out of the system.
But how he did it haunts him.
A lot of time has passed and a now-grown Isaiah is on a mission to do some good and pay back a debt he believes he owes to society in general and one person in particular.
Mainly, he does what he does because he's a genuinely good person at heart. Fortunately, he has the street smarts that let him read the room to avoid getting conned and a genius-level intellect that allows him to piece things together with unnerving accuracy.
His one-time roommate and current frenemy, Dodson, is the perfect sidekick for the straight-laced Isaiah. He's oily but loveable. Straddling the line like only a semi-criminal entrepreneur can, and somehow you still like him.
A shady-as-hell Watson, if you will.
There's a lot to unpack in that relationship.
Now that they're both older, Dodson brings a big money case to Isaiah (for a small cut of the fee, of course) and decides that he's going to stick around and help him solve it.
I was entertained from start to finish. Zero complaints.
Sullivan Jones did an amazing job as the narrator of the audiobook.
Highly Recommended.

I'm in the middle of book 3 now. They need to turn this into a streaming series.

I forgot to add this one to my currently reading list and almost forgot about it! I just downloaded the 2nd book now. Sometimes when I use the app it won't let me add books! So frustrating. I've probably lost a lot of books like that. lol
Spent lots of my adult like in Long Beach where these novels mostly take place and they are spot on for the mix of this area. IQ is a favorite and I keep meaning to get back to the series. I read the first two and then got away from crime stories. Great review and I love your pictures.

I know how that goes! I'll get into a genre for years and then just burn out. I'm especially bad about stopping midway through a series and forgetting until someone writes a review and reminds me to go back.

Do you start over at that point? I feel like you read some of those Agatha Christie stories 4 or 5 times. Or is that just because all of those collections have some of the same stories in them?

Sometimes I re-read the AC's just because they are comfort reads. Right now I'm listening to the dramatizations of some of her famous books. Those are cool!
It depends on how long it's been since I read the original books for most series. If I forgot about them for more than 4 years, I'd have to go back. I wouldn't remember a thing.

I absolutely LOVE the narrator for this one. He does such a good job. I've got the 2nd on my phone right now and may start it today if the romance I'm reading doesn't stop making me cringe.

I just finished the third book last night. Still very good. I've got to detour over to a book about baseball next though before it expires. Plus, it's spring training.

Well, if it's spring training...
I wish I liked baseball but that's my least favorite sport to watch. I'm trying to brace myself because my someday son-in-law breathes baseball and I'm sure my grandkids will be in baby ball Which means I'll have to show up for that and fight the other grandma for supremacy.
I used to live a few miles down the road from Legends Field. That counts for something, right?

Only if you go to the games. You need to go watch the Savannah Bananas. I think you'd have a lot of fun there. They make baseball fun. They even have their own rules. They are kind of the Globetrotters of baseball.

Great review, Anne! I had forgotten about this series. Your review was a nudge to check my library, and I was happy to find the third book has been added to their digital collection.
Rights were bought by Snoop Dog a few years back and it was supposed to be adapted as a series but haven't heard anything since.

It's so good, Emma! I have the 3rd book downloaded, too!

Really? I would think this would make a fantastic series.
