"This isn't good, you know. We're never going to get over each other if we keep getting pulled back together."
"I'm never going to get over you, no matter what."

Stop glowering at me like that, book cover dude.
I'm not raising my ratings because of it.

***I always try to be as objective as I can with my ratings for DARK THEMES & TRIGGER WARNINGS, SMUT TECHNICAL CONTENT/INTENSITY, SMUT QUANTITY, ROMANCE QUANTITY, ANGST LEVEL, ENEMIES-TO-LOVERSNESS; the ratings for CHARACTERS, WRITING, PLOT, WORLD BUILDING, SETTING, SMUT QUALITY, ROMANCE QUALITY, are instead tied to my own subjective reading experience and final opinion of the book.

This had so much potential, I swear. It pains me to admit it was average at best.
I've purchased this on a whim after reading and absolutely going feral over another one of Julia Wolf's books.
Was I waiting for the magic to repeat itself? Kinda.
Was I let down? Unfortunately.
Serves me right for being an eager little bitch who can pace herself when it comes to her romance binges, I guess.

Where Waves Break has a premise that would make me salivate on a regular day, but it's the execution that left me questioning a lot of things, including my own capacity to judge books based on their plot.
The characters were absolutely unrealistic and I even dare say unrelatable (in Diego's case more than June's). Diego is described as a grumpy single dad but in reality is just a stubborn and rude ass. Don't disrespect the Supreme Grump Daddy Extraordinaire that is Tobias Rhodes (All Rhodes Lead Here) by putting assholes like Diego Garza on his same category ever again, pls.
When we first meet him he goes all spoiled bitch on the house help's ass and he was insensitive and treated the FMC like an used tissue most of the time and for no reason at all. A real heartthrob in the flesh, right?
He also kept calling June a good girl out of nowhere and in the most inappropriate of ways, and instead of resulting hot, he came out as a total patronising creep.
June is sweet and lovely, unless Diego is involved. In that case, she turns into a doormat and pushes all her personality under the rug to give his ego all the room it needs. Please, girl. I get it, you've got a praise kink (don't we all at this point) and were basically thrown into the open arms of your teenage crush like a piece of meat into a lion's cage, but for the love of everything holy under the sun.
Grow a spineeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
I'm glad in the end she stands up for herself a little (especially with her sister - get a life, Iris), but having to witness her letting everyone dictate how she should live and think was exhausting.
The part where she got sick and Diego took care of her made me cringe so bad. It was one of those moments that should never make it out of a self-indulgent fanfiction, and it only confimerd neither June nor Diego would actually survive in the real world.
The smut was frigging underwhelming. The relationship between the main characters is latent and dull, and I can excuse June because she's had a crush on Diego for years now, but him falling for her as fast as he did was pretty unbelievable.
The dirty talk kind of helped, but there isn't enough dirty talking in the world to make up for the lack of chemistry.
The only part I really liked were the scenes with Diego's son, his brother and sister-in-law, or his dad and step-mother. Basically, everyone related to Diego, except Diego himself.
Oh and I also really loved that part where Diego's dad and his brother give him shit for being an ass.
Good times, babes. Good times.
Yeah, I guess you guys've figured it out by now.
I can't stand the dude.
The subplot about June's dad infuriated me to no end, because it had the potential to give this story the angst it (actually) needed -not the third act breakup bullshit I had to endure-, but was resolved in a rush and in a way that left me wondering why it was even there in the first place.

Cute epilogue.
Too bad Diego ruined it by being there 😩
