Today I went to a place called Goodreads, it is a kind of litrary salo which is useful for a girl that wants to improve her mind like I do. So I wondered how I would be a social success there it is quite different from New York but luckily I met a gentleman called Mr. Paul Bryant who took an interest in me and wanted to help me improve my mind. Mr. Bryant said it is very very easy you just post a review that is a bit riskay and has an artistic picture at the top. I said I did not know how to do artistic pictures but Mr. Bryant said you just borrow one from another review like from Miss Lisa Jayne who is very very popular. I said isnt that stealing but Mr. Bryant said no it is an act of ommadge and she will be delighted.

Then I said what do I write under the picture and he said you just be yourself and you will see the votes come rolling in, like I said it is very very easy. So I copied out what I wrote in my diary for today and Mr. Bryant gave it to his friend Dr. Rayner to post and they said I would be an Internet celebrity before I knew it. I said that was very very interesting but was there a place on the Internet where they could buy me an emerald bracelet since a girl doesn't want to waste her time. But Mr. Bryant said that unfortunately he was to busy today to go shopping.

I like the Internet very very much but I think I will go back to New York because the gentlemen there know how to treat a lady.

Sofia Diamonds are a girl's best friend, after all. :p

Manny I have thought about it Sofia and you are very very right, votes are nice but diamonds are a more sincere way for a gentleman to show he appreciates a girls mind.

Richard Manny, did Jessica help you write this? And why isn't there a picture of her in it?

Appreciation is subjective to the subject and the object (gentleman + girl's brains). Here we can follow the money trail as we do in mysteries. :)

Cecily Where are the "gentlemen" of whom you write? ;)

Lorelei uses the word in a rather specialised sense, to mean "male persons willing to buy her expensive jewelry". I am not sure there are any on Goodreads, but apparently plenty in 1926 New York.

Cecily Ha ha. I suspect that is almost the opposite of a true gentleman!

Manny I hope you are right, since it certainly improves my chances of being a true gentleman. I liked reading about Lorelei's adventures, but I am sure we would not have got along.

Cecily I wonder if Mary Wesley borrowed from this, consciously or otherwise, in Harnessing Peacocks?

Aliza haha! beautifully said

Manny Thank you Aliza I see you are also a girl that wants to improve her mind.

hayden YES.

Manny Hayden, I know we've only just met, but will you buy me an emerald bracelet?

hayden Manny wrote: "Hayden, I know we've only just met, but will you buy me an emerald bracelet?"

i would be a waste of your time if i didn't now wouldn't i? i'm surprised you're asking for emerald since anything but diamond is rather depressing.

Manny Emeralds are a girl's second best friend.

Manny When we know each other a little better I will let you buy me some diamonds. It is important that a man has something to look forward to.

of course. i will wait until tomorrow to start the diamond hunt. until then i will talk and talk and talk some more so we know each other because you have brains and i talk with something to say, unlike those enervating gentlemen who talk with nothing to say.

Manny Hayden I am very glad we understand each other so well you are a real gentleman. I prefer Cartier because I am a traditional girl. Tiffany is good too. But don't believe that stupid song all the stones have to be square cut. You must allow me my little capreeces then we will get along.

it shall be cartier and it shall be large enough for others to see it glint from across a room. i shall give i to you at luncheon tomorrow for i am a gentleman who really knows how to treat a girl.

Manny Hayden you are not at all like Mr. Bryant I hope he is reading this he could learn something. Please pick me up at 12.30 for lunch at the Ritz we will sit at my usual table. If I may give you a little tip you should offer me the bracelet after the caviar but before the lobster that is when a girl is weakest. I would not say this to everyone.

hayden i am a literary gentleman so i will offer a novel with the bracelet to improve your mind as well as your wrist.

Manny Hayden I will come to Goodreads more I did not know their were people like you here. Please make sure the novel has a green cover to match the emeralds these little details are so important.

Elena Manny, I cannot believe you have (voluntarily??) subjected yourself to the torture of reading this thing.

Manny Elena, I am very very sorry that I did not see your comment until now. I read the book when my shoulder was very very broken and it took my mind off things. Some very very unkind people say I do not have a mind but I am sure you know me better than that.

Susie Hayden and Manny. Thank you both for the heartiest chuckles I’ve had since closing Lorelei’s diary.

Manny Thank you Susie I see you understand the filosofy of emerald bracelets better than Elena.
