this. book. suuuuuuuucks.
i can't believe it was an international sensation. i can't believe it was adapted into a moviestarring actual queen emily blunt. i can't believe it SOLD A SINGLE COPY. (i didn't buy this one. my mom did. so there.)
this is just...a straight up bad book on every level. the characters are so insanely unlikable it's cartoonish. it'd be funny if it didn't make EVERY SECOND OF THIS BOOK, EVERY PAGE, EVERY WORD, A FRESH HELL TO FIGHT THROUGH IN ORDER TO GET TO THE NEXT ONE, WHICH IS, GUESS WHAT, ALSO HELL.
this would be maybe O.K. or at least survivable if this book was scary or thrilling or spooky or intriguing at all, but guess what, IT ISN'T. just some lady getting blasted on vodka and riding a train. looking out some windows. sometimes sneaking a peek at a house.
the entertainment potential is almost overwhelming.
honestly all i really want from a thriller = some thrills. that really does not seem like too much to ask for, considering IT'S THE F*CKING NAME OF THE WHOLE ENTIRE GENRE. and the reveal of this makes it even worse.
bottom line: straight up one of the worst books i've ever read. are there people who like this book? if so, HOW????
(this is part of a project i'm doing where i write mini-reviews of books i read a long time ago. this parenthetical insert is a constant snoozefest)

"i hate all these characters so much. reading from rachel's perspective makes me legitimately sick to my stomach. i don't know if i've ever been so disgusted with a character. if this book doesn't make a U-turn soon i'm going to have to DNF."

I agree with you. I can't see what all the fuss was about either. Fortunately, I read a library copy.

1) Allegedly - this book is fucking terrifying like I don’t even,, categorize this it’s all realistic fic but it scared the crap out of me
2) Female of the Species - a Fucking Masterpiece!! also real fic but it rocked
3) And the Trees Crept In - just,, a straight up thriller
4) Murder on the Orient Express
5) Big Little Lies - more slowburn but also kind of the most emotionally cathartic thing I’ve ever read
6) Jane Unlimited by Kristin Cashire,, listen this book scared me so much at points it’s weird and speculative fictiony
7) Slasher Girls and Monster Boys - my all-time fav short story collection maybe
8) the book I’m reading right now (Sacred Lies Of Minnow Bly) it’s so fucking good I’m going to binge it

I’d like to explain where 2 of the stars come from, according to the perspective of a person who lives in the western United States, we don’t have trains...the few trains do that do exist, you can’t drink. Western Americans were so shocked by drinking on trains that we Day dreamed through most of the plot, mildly paying attention as she did shit and was a shitty person. It should be called drinking on a train...we would have give 3 extra stars
Funniest review I've read in ages. This is on my Tbr shelf, but instead of wasting my time reading it,I will give it to someone I don't like.
Thanks Emma!

Actually, I am a mom of a daughter in her 30s and we both didn't like it. As some one said, none of the characters were likeable.
