message 1: by Cameron (new)

Cameron (cswagner) Since I didn't see this floating around anywhere I thought I would start one. Anyway, I'll start:

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Mistborn The Final Empire
The Eye of the World

And of course, I will be reading The Name of the Wind sometime soon here as well.

message 2: by Sandi (new)

Sandi (sandikal) I'm currently reading The Thirteenth Tale A Novel by Diane Setterfield. My to-read pile for the next couple of weeks includes:

The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson
Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman
The Ghost Map The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic--and How It Changed Science, Cities, and the Modern World by Steven Johnson
Gilead A Novel by Marilynne Robinson
First Among Sequels by Jasper Fforde

I just ordered The Crown Conspiracy by Michael J. Sullivan

message 3: by Jon (last edited Feb 03, 2009 11:03AM) (new)

Jon (jonmoss) | 529 comments Currently listening to these audio books while traveling and commuting:

Gilead A Novel by Marilynne Robinson
Revolutionary Characters What Made the Founders Different by Gordon S. Wood
The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell

I also have the audio book for The Road which I will start after finishing the Sparrow.

I started reading (but may not finish):

The Club Dumas by Arturo Pérez-Reverte - decided to back burner this one.

I will probably read The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold (started reading 2/3/2009) as well as The Ghost Brigades by John Scalzi.

After that, if there's any time left in February, I will tackling my mooched book stack.

I also just ordered The Crown Conspiracy.

message 4: by Chris (last edited Feb 02, 2009 08:27AM) (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 916 comments Right now I'm working on the following:

Morgawr by Terry Brooks
Stephen King Goes to the Movies by Stephen King
Just After Sunset by Stephen King

Aside from those, I also have plans/hopes to get into the following:

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
Griffin's Daughter by Leslie Ann Moore
The Crown Conspiracy by Michael Sullivan

Those are for the reading group here, and should keep me busy for awhile.....also on my soon list are:

Mistborn The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson
Blood of the Fold by Terry Goodkind
Kitty and the Midnight Hour by Carrie Vaughn
Busted Flush edited by George R.R. Martin

I probably won't get to all of them in February. Some will carry over for awhile, I'm sure....

message 5: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 629 comments Wow lots of great reads this month's - and thanks all for TCC loving. This is what i have on tap at the moment.

Good Omens The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch
Faerie Wars
Breaking Dawn
A Game of Thrones

message 6: by Cameron (new)

Cameron (cswagner) Hey Robin,

I took a peek at your books and noticed that you do not have Eclipse on your list as read. Have you read it yet? If not, you should probably give that a try before you read Breaking Dawn.

message 7: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 629 comments Well....There is a story there....I read the first two - Loved Twilight was bored by New Dawn. And had convinced myself not to read the others but if I read Eclipse I knew I would HAVE to read Breaking Dawn. Now I've heard enough to know the "basic" plots points to both of them. I'm doing a "winter challenge" and I need to read a romance - and of all the romances I could think of I would prefer something from this series. So I reserved them both from libaray and BD was available but Eclipse is still like 70 people away. I'm actually interested in reading them "not sequentially to seem if all makes sense - I may go back and read Eclipse after -who knows.....

message 8: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 996 comments I'm about a little over half way through The Hero of Ages. It seems a bit slower paced compared to the first two books, to be honest. Maybe it has something to do with the book being hardcover, more words on a page, and all that.

Next up will probably be The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling.

message 9: by Megan (last edited Feb 02, 2009 11:47AM) (new)

Megan First I have all the books I'm still in the middle of (recently, since otherwise this list would be much longer):
Light of the Oracle by Victoria Hanley
The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien (I've read it before, but it's one of my favorites so...)
Inkheart by Cornelia Funke (I'm actually listening to the audio-book-Lynn Redgrave's reading is marvelous!)
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
Alphabet of Dreams by Susan Fletcher
...yeah, I should finish all of those this month

Meanwhile I have a whole slew that I haven't started yet, but also plan to finish this month:
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
2001 A Space Odyssey by Arthur Clarke
Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card
Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmund Rostand
The Discoverers by Daniel J. Boorstin
and countless (seriously countless) others

Of course as I said last month these plans are a little useless due to the sheer number of books I want to read.

message 10: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrilovescrows) I really want to make progress on Storm of Swords by George RR Martin since I had put it down for a time

message 11: by Cameron (new)

Cameron (cswagner) Well, I finally received my copy of Griffin's Daughter (a bit late). I'll try and get to that ASAP so I can join in the discussion.

message 12: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) I just got Queen of the Darkness by Anne Bishop - the third in the Black Jewels Trilogy (which, from what I can tell isn't a trilogy at all).

I also FINALLY got Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey and am REALLY excited about it.

Coming soon in the mail is the second in Goodkind's Sword of Truth series and I'll likely also pick up the third of the Wheel of Time series.

For the Historical Fiction group on here I'm going to read Katherine by Anya Seton. The group is also reading Outlander, which I've read, but I'm the mod leading the discussion so may re-read.

I'm also getting into Dragonfly in Amber in the same Outlander series.

In non-fantasy news, I'm reading:

Song of Solomon
Gilead A Novel
Crazy Love Overwhelmed by a Relentless God

message 13: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 629 comments Terri wrote: "I really want to make progress on Storm of Swords by George RR Martin since I had put it down for a time"

GRRM is such an "fantasy icon" I can't believe I've not read him before...I just got Game of Thrones and plan to start it soon.

message 14: by Leslie Ann (new)

Leslie Ann (leslieann) | 224 comments Whew!! Where do you all find the time to read so many books?!!! I'm lucky to finish one book every 2-3 months! Sadly(or happily, depending on how one looks at it) my life is so busy with work-related stuff and everything else I have or wnat to do, I only get to read 10-15 minutes a day for pleasure. At this rate, I'll never finish my 'To Read' list! WAAAAAAH!!!!

message 15: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 629 comments I commute to and from work on public transit so I always get 2 hours of reading a day.

message 16: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) So do I, Robin! Exactly 1.5 hours of reading per day. I'll be sad when we ever move away from NYC and I have to give up my built in reading time!

Also, I really enjoyed JR&MN, but I like historical fiction AND fantasy, so maybe that helped? I thought this was a great melding of the two genres - the footnotes were some of the best part of the entire book for me!

And as for your romance, Robin, you should come read Outlander with our group!

I hope you love Game of Thrones - I was immediately addicted and had to work really hard not to speed through them with the knowledge that he's writing soooo slooooowly.

message 17: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I am currently reading:
Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson
Calibre by Sam Sarkar
Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson

I will be reading Crown Conspiracy by Michael Sullivan as soon as it arrives!

I hope to also read books recommended by friends from Goodreads:
Hyperion by Dan Simmons
Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold
Brokedown Palace by Steven Brust
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
Dune by Frank Hebert

I've never read a lot of sci fi, but the people who recommended these are also friends who are on our fantasy group, so hopefully I'll find a common ground!

message 18: by Cameron (last edited Feb 03, 2009 04:50PM) (new)

Cameron (cswagner) Well, I received a copy of The Host A Novel by Stephenie Meyer from the library much sooner than I expected. It is a new book, so I only have two weeks to read the 600 page monster.

Just finished Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling, and will be starting Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire soon.

Still reading Mistborn The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson, and The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan. However I have quite a few other books checked out from the library and I have to attend to some of them first.

Others on my soon to read list:
Dune by Frank Herbert
Griffin's Daughter by Leslie Ann Moore
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
Neverwhere A Novel by Neil Gaiman
Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card

I don't expect to finish all these books this month. A few will most likely carry over.

message 19: by Gail (new)

Gail What is JR&MN? Do you mean Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell?

I have to read a bunch of books for the RWA Rita contest, but some of those are fantasy. one leans a little toward horror... Anyway, that's what I'm reading First in Feb.

But I just got
Dragonheart Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern by Anne & Todd McCaffrey, and the new
Card book, Ender in Exile, so I may read those. But I also got my Christmas present, a Sony reader, and I have
Lynn Viehl's Stay the Night on it, which I have Already read. (think I posted a review.) I also have
The Accidental Demon Slayer by Angie Fox, which I've heard good things about.
I plan to get the new Carrie Vaughn Kitty the werewolf book too, if I think I have time to read it. I have to start writing the next book in my steampunk series--hopefully next week. I think I know where to start it now. Maybe.

message 20: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) Gail - hahaha. Yes, silly typo. That's what I got for trying to work and chat. :)

message 21: by Gail (new)

Gail Good, I hated to think I was missing something good. I had trouble getting into that one...happens sometimes.

message 22: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 629 comments Gail wrote: "What is JR&MN? Do you mean Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell? ..."

Ya JS&MN - is Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. Just a typo.

message 23: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) Gail, I had trouble getting into it as well, but once Jonathan Strange was introduced into the mix I thought it really took off. Again, just me.

message 24: by Heather (new)

Heather (ham1299) I just finished Inkheart. I am now starting Inkspell.

message 25: by Melyssa (new)

Melyssa I just started The Magician's Nephew & The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe both by CS Lewis.

I hope to get to The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, and I want to finish up book 2 in the Night World series.
If I can get them all done by the end of the month, I'll be doing good *lol*. Seems like I don't have enough time to read these days.

message 26: by Robin (last edited Feb 06, 2009 07:11AM) (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 629 comments I hope I can get all these done. A number of them are for bookclubs - My Good Omens Book club is on Sunday but I'm enjoying it so much I'm sure I can have it finished up in a day or so.

Avempartha by Michael J. Sullivan Good Omens The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Terry Pratchett Faerie Wars by Herbie Brennan [image error] A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Vol. 1) by George R.R. Martin The Princess Bride by William Goldman

message 27: by Oscar (new)

Oscar I read the gormenghast trilogy long ago, however am going to re-read it in between some wheel of time books, since i will shortly be attending a lecture by sebastian peake.

message 28: by Marc (new)

Marc (authorguy) | 393 comments I just read a great little mystery novel I got out of the library for my wife, called Without Mercy A "Where Are They Now?" Mystery. The premise involves a made-up TV show from the 70s called Kissing Cousins, which is supposed to be a combination of The Addams Family and the Brady Bunch. Three 'normal' kids and three wierdos in one house, children of two sisters. It's a show I'd watch if it were on now.

message 29: by Rolien (new)

Rolien (kettricken) I've finished Ender's Shadow by Orson Scott Card. It left me impressed, and gave more depth to the fabulous Ender's Game.

At the moment I'm reading Hyperion by Dan Simmons; very good but it takes some concentration to follow everything that's going on (not that that's a bad thing...).
Also, I'm reading Blindness by Jose Saramago. The Dutch version, to be precise, translated as 'Stad der Blinden'.

message 30: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) I'm reading a bunch of stuff right now. I keep picking things up, then putting them down and picking something else up. I just started A Game of Thrones and I love it, so I bought the rest of the series (the ones that are out, anyway).

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

I am currently reading The Pearls (Fantasy) by Deborah Chester. I am almost done. I am hoping to then finish Revelation Space (Science Fiction) by Alastair Reynolds.

message 32: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm slowly reading Donnerjack & still trying to finish 4 other books I started. I really need to find more time to read. More hours per day needed!

message 33: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) Has anybody ever read anything by Jennifer Roberson? A friend gave me Karavans #1 to read, so I'm wondering if it's worth a shot...

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

Leslie, it also takes me awhile to get through a book. I tried rotation reading (reading a little from a different book every day) but I just gave that up to concentrate on one book at a time. With my teaching day job and writing aspirations I have just come to the conclusion that I will have to force reading and electronic entertainment into the post midnight hours. So, unless I learn how to speed read, I will have to abandon my one book a week goal. Sigh!

message 35: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) Update: I finished both Queen of the Darkness and Kushiel's Dart and adored them both. I've heard the two series compared and I can see where that comes from, though I think Kushiel's Dart is superior. I can't wait to get further into that world!

Also finished Song of Solomon which I could appreciate for its beauty, but didn't love myself. Working on Gilead A Novel now, which is short and will likely be followed by another fantasy novel... I need my fix! :)

message 36: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 996 comments I just finished The Hero of Ages yesterday. Totally didn't see that ending coming. I'm already missing these characters. :( It was a fantastic trilogy.

I also read Watchmen by Alan Moore, which was amazing!

Now, I'm onto The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling.

message 37: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 629 comments Elise wrote: "Now, I'm onto The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling.

I must confess that I was a bit disappointed in This one. It was a quick fun read - but I thought it could have been so much more. I think it is great that all the profits are going to chairty.

message 38: by Jeanne (new)

Jeanne (jeannekc) I'm currently reading Thunderhead having finished The Crown Conspiracy in only 3 days :-( (well, it took 4 calendar days, but I didn't have time to read on one of those days) Thunderhead is not exactly a fantasy, it is classified as a suspense? But is one of those books that is difficult to classify. There are paranormal-types of characters, archaeology, space science, history and who knows what else I'll encounter? I've run across all that in just 53 pages! A friend gave me the book because she knew of my interest in southwestern US native american tribes, particularly the Anasazi. It's really fascinating so far!

message 39: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 629 comments Sounds very interesting Jeanne -be sure to report back when you are done with it.

message 40: by Jane (new)

Jane (jane_jones) So I finished up Griffen's Daughter - going to go over and post on that in a minute. I've already read Name of the Wind and Crown Conspiracy so I'm set for those. Wonder what I should read next....

1 - GoodOmens
2 - Princess Bride
3 - Neverwhere
4 - Game of Thrones

Anyone have suggestions?

message 41: by Sandi (new)

Sandi (sandikal) "Good Omens" and "Neverwhere" are two of the best books I read last year. They're both quick reads. I love the movie "Princess Bride" and am really looking forward to the book. I wasn't incredibly impressed with "Game of Thrones". It's got way too many story lines and characters. It never wraps up any of the many story lines. It's a huge, long book that just sets up a sequel. I decided not to read the rest of the series because it's just way too many volumes and the author isn't even finished yet.

message 42: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 996 comments I finished The Tales of Beedle the Bard. I thought it was pretty cute, but the real highlight was Dumbledore's commentary of course.

Now I'm reading The Bone Doll's Twin by Lynn Flewelling.

message 43: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 629 comments I'll also cast a vote for Good Omens - I still laugh (but to myself) about parts of that book. I also liked Princess Bride and it is a lot like the movie but his "asides" are very interesting.

message 44: by Dame (new)

Dame Daughter of the forest

message 45: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey Emily, i read Gilead and liked it. hope you do too.

near the top of my to-read pile are Wolf Moon and The Harp of the Grey Rose, both by Charles De Lint

message 46: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) Just finished Gilead and thought it was devastatingly beautiful. Great book.

message 47: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) Currently reading and loving Outlander

message 48: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) Emily, Are you discussing Outlander now? I'm almost finished with it and would love to join in.

message 49: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) Kathy, we're still discussing it over in the European Royalty group (we expanded and now to a European Royalty read and then a regular historical fiction read each month). Come on over and join!

message 50: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) I've been meaning to read Outlander forever! I keep hearing mixed reviews about it. It seems like people either absolutely love it or hate it. I actually met Diana Gabaldon a couple weeks ago at my store (B&N). She's probably the most famous author ever to wander into our store as of yet, so we were all pretty excited!
Right now, I'm reading Mistborn and Clash of Kings.
