Angelika Regossi was an East Europe news reporter for BBC radio during the unprecedented changes in the region; the fall of the “Iron Curtain”, the expansion of NATO and the European Union and the transition from communism to capitalism.
In addition to BBC, she freelanced for RFI (Radio France International) and DW radio (Deutsche Welle) and worked as a TV producer for Belgium VRT, German Spiegel, Dutch NOS, the Voice of America, and others. At that time, she was writing under the name Agnes R. Bos, or Агнеш Бос.
Regossi travelled extensively through the region, reporting about the major historical events in East Europe; including several Balkan wars of independence during the break-up of Yugoslavia (1991–2001), the overthrow of the presi

Hello Ray,
I am so glad you wrote me, I didn't know you would reply :) I am also not sophisticated with the cyber world and being active in social media is unusual to me. I still have to learn a lot.
Being patient is nice - but of course, the author wants his/her books to be read and liked.

You asked me which of my books to read first.

I would suggest reading first "Love in Communism. A Young Woman's Adult Story". I wrote it from my heart. The main character is a girl who becomes a young woman. Some parts of her story will shock you or make you cry, somewhere you will laugh. Full spectrum of feelings.
I hope you will have an enjoyable reading and I am very curious about your opinion.
Kind regards,
Angelika

“Oil

“Soviet Russia cannot survive without Baku’s oil,” told comrade Vladimir Lenin.
One of the plans was to drain the Caspian Sea:
“Is it possible? Can you drain the Caspian Sea?” said the powerful Stalin. It was more an order than a question.”
(- Angelika Regossi, “Russian Colonial Food”. Chapter: Azerbaijan - Oil Country).

Mafia

“With his wife Victoria, they reigned here for nineteen years. This period Georgians called ironically the Victorian Era, and his wife got the name Queen Victoria.
Victoria created the system when all was for sale: state documents ten times the price; 5,000 roubles to enter the Communist party; 50,000 for the judge job, … “
(- Angelika Regossi, “Russian Colonial Food”. Chapter: Gruzia - Where Soviet Mafia Was Born).

Smoking

“Smoking breaks in the USSR were long and often—and became an official excuse not to work, causing huge damage to the already failing state economy. But on the other hand, with zero unemployment and prison terms, if you are not on a payroll, the state could not provide enough work for everybody.
People had to show up every day in the workplace. Boredom from nothing-to-do turned into massive laziness and Soviet workers spent long hours in the smoke rooms. For some, it was a place to relax, for others, to provoke a frank conversation—because … Well, let’s talk about it later.”
(- Angelika Regossi, “Russian Colonial Food”. Chapter: Litva - Friends and Rebels).

God

“The bus was driving slowly, just forty km an hour on the slippery winter road. Outside was a spectacular view of the Caucasus mountains. Here and there appeared churches: nearby and far away, but always on the top of the hill:
“Closer to God, as high as possible,” crossed His mind.
The bus stopped with a creaking sound, and He slowly got off:
“For me, Khor Virap Monastery will be the resting place: from the Soviet life … from the communist lies … I shall spend here the rest of my life. And from here … I shall go to eternity …” these were His last thoughts before He entered the monastery gate. He was dead tired from all that happened, walking uphill closer to God.”
(- Angelika Regossi, “Russian Colonial Food”. Chapter: Armenia - Road in the First Christian State).”

“Некоторые специалисты считают, что на английском разговаривает полтора миллиарда человек. Другие считают английский язык самым распространенным в мире среди тех кому он родной и не очень. Одно можно сказать наверняка – с английским вы не потеряетесь в мире: он может здорово помочь во многих ситуациях.”
(- Angelika Regossi, “In English as in Russian. По-английски как по-русски”. Предисловие)

“Я предлагаю вам легкое, а не трудное обучение – для будущей легкой жизни и работы. Тысяча повседневных английских слов, таких же, как и русские – вы можете выучить утром за чашечкой кофе, в ожидании автобуса или самолета, или чего-то еще.”
(- Angelika Regossi, “In English as in Russian. По-английски как по-русски”. Предисловие)

“В этой книге тысяча распространенных английских слов. Я не включила специальные технические слова, а также медицинские, деловые, IT, геологические, и им подобные. Эти слова для специалистов – а „Mоя Тысяча Cлов” для широкой публики.”
(- Angelika Regossi, “In English as in Russian. По-английски как по-русски”. Предисловие)”

“Russian is spoken by almost half a billion people on the planet, of which about half are native speakers. And Russia has been closely watched by the world for many decades, due to the unprecedented events there.”
(- Angelika Regossi, “In English as in Russian”. Preface)

“With this book, I offer you easy, not hard, learning – for easy life and work. One thousand everyday Russian words which are the same as English – you can learn in the morning during coffee time while waiting for the bus or airplane, or something else.”
(- Angelika Regossi, “In English as in Russian”. Preface)

“Will Russia restore the Empire or fall apart? Only history will show. But for now – yes, I am sure that it is worth to understand about 75% of what Russians are talking about, by quickly learning one thousand words.”

“A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.”
Virginia Woolf, A Room of One’s Own

“He was awake; it seemed like a long time, all dressed, sitting deep in the armchair, small with a grey face. I stopped at the room entrance in silence, swallowed my words, and thought that maybe he didn’t even go to sleep that night. His facial colour reminded me of a teacher, dying from cancer.
‘Grandpa, what’s wrong? What’s wrong with you? Mother is coming home, did you hear?’ I came closer and touched his hand. It was colder than usual, and the frost went down my back. ‘Do you hear me? What’s wrong with you?’ I asked, and he was silent.
Suddenly, I understood everything.”
(-- Angelika Regossi, “Love in Communism. A Young Woman’s Adult Story”. Chapter 5: University of Life)

“‘Let me tell you this way. In the academy, we were told to marry early, before we go on the first shift. My first shift starts in a few months in July. I shall be half a year under the water in the submarine, carrying nuclear weapons. They advise us to marry and to make children as soon as possible because who knows what will be on that shift. Also, I told you about the radiation. I know submariners’ who cannot make children because of the radiation on the ship,’ said Prohor.
‘How to explain to you, my girl? To make children, a man needs an erection but the radiation kills it. I am afraid until I reach the rank of admiral, I shall be impotent … unable to make children …,’ Prohor told sadly from his bed.”
(-- Angelika Regossi, “Love in Communism. A Young Woman’s Adult Story”. Chapter 6: Fiance from Submarine)

“So, it happened there; between the two biggest islands of two big enemies, Japan and the USSR.
‘Now I recall that Prohor praised that they can attack unexpectedly from a submarine, from under the water, with nuclear rockets.’ I was astonished that I knew all these things, which earlier had never interested me.”
(-- Angelika Regossi, “Love in Communism. A Young Woman’s Adult Story”. Chapter 7: Between Two Men)

“‘Do you remember what I told you before I died? You promised me to think big! My little star, if you think big, you will become big! Use my diamonds and the wall clock to become big! Dream big, Anfisa—and you will be more than just a wife to a man.
‘But remember, you have to take diamonds and the clock outside the USSR, where they value these things.’ I heard my grandfather’s voice live, close, but I didn’t see him.”
(-- Angelika Regossi, “Love in Communism. A Young Woman’s Adult Story”. Chapter 8: Earner Marriage No. 1)”

“Idézet:

"És imbolyogtam az élet hullámain:
szerelemből gyűlöletbe, gyűlöletből erőltetett szerelembe."

“Jews

““For you it is good—you are not a Jew. It will be easier for you to enter the University. But Sasha is a Jew — for him, it will be difficult,” Galja said with the burr to her girl neighbor.
The girl rushed back home, jumping over two-three stairs, stormed the door and shouted:
“Granny, Granny! What does it mean to be a Jew? Is it something bad?”
Poor girl, she didn’t know yet that she was also a Jew. He had to hide it from her to make her life easier in the USSR. Here, the Jews were not welcomed. In the USSR, it is good to be Russian.”
(- Angelika Regossi, “Russian Colonial Food”. Chapter: Russia - Jews and Nicknames).

Diversity

“Communists noticed that Kazakhstan was incredibly big—the size of West Europe. Perfectly suitable for huge communist projects and experiments, which brought to Kazakhstan many scientists, engineers, agronomists, builders, and … Soviet secret service — to control the situation.

“Kazakhs also have culture, their own, different from ours. They are Muslims. Oh, yeah, atheist, Soviet Muslims,” smiled Boris and added, “You said Kazaki, but they are Kazakhs, these two are different people. Let me explain,” Boris was happy to talk about something else than the Communist Party plans.”
(- Angelika Regossi, “Russian Colonial Food”. Chapter: Kazakhstan - Home for Nuclear Tests).

Disabled

“Turkmens are very close people, but disabled Turkmens are even more. She decided to give him another—spiritual life, that’s why, each day she spent time telling him stories. He would not be like the millions disabled in the USSR: hidden in prison-like hospitals, with no hope and alone, bad treatment and food, closed to the outside world.”
(- Angelika Regossi, “Russian Colonial Food”. Chapter: Turkmenia - Closed People).

Traditions

““If I would marry Tajik, I would have to furnish our home and bring everything inside it. All from my father’s money. Because I would marry very young and would not earn yet. So, you have to be nice to your father, otherwise, he gives nothing or little,” smiled Nathalie and continued her wedding story, And … I would have this!”
Nathalie jumped out of the sofa to the mirror and quickly drew something with a black pencil on her face. When she turned smiling, girlfriends were shocked …”
