In particular, I wanted to explore what happens to the human nature in that moment of panic when our logic clashes with something that refuses to be explained or understood through our familiar lens. I’m a huge fan of David Lynch (and of “Lynchian logic”), but I also love Hayao Miyazaki, Labyrinth, and X- Files - and all of it influenced my writing and reasoning. I hope that What The Woods Keep leaves readers energized to explore the world around them, to keep an open mind, and to be true to themselves no matter what they are facing. I also very much enjoyed writing the strong friendship between two girls that’s at the core of this book! (less)

Then I go someplace cool and quiet, make myself a cup of strong bitter coffee and think about the real reason behind my writer’s block de jour. Knowing more or less how my writing brain works now, I tend to get blocks when I, a). can’t decide on the style/voice of the book, and, b). get bogged down by some specific plot conundrum. If it’s the former, I go back to the drawing board, do a bit more research, and contemplate what I want this story to be and how I should tell it. And if it’s latter, I just move on to the next part in the story, but leave a little reminder for myself in-text to come back to this problem later on. Usually, I find that plot elements causing me the writer’s block agony get edited out in my first round of revision, anyway! (less)
