Adam Driver’s watches serenely steal the show amid the Megalopolis chaos in Cannes

An assumption has been bubbling for years that Francis Ford Coppola’s latest masterpiece, Megalopolis starring Adam Driver, would be nothing short of utterly bonkers. But judging by the initial reviews it seems no one was ready for quite how mad it would turn out.

While the iconic Godfather director is chief perpetrator of the chaos behind the camera, Adam Driver leads the mayhem on screen as Caesar Catilina, an architect with outlandishly utopian intentions, oozing the same beguiling 2012 energy that turned him into such a star in Girls way back when.

On top of all the mega-drama about the film at the Cannes premiere that will no doubt continue into the summer, Driver has also driven watch lovers crazy for an altogether different reason. In the space of 24 hours, he was spotted wearing not one, but two grail-worthy Piaget Polo pieces.

It’s been quite the year already for Piaget as the charming Swiss watchmakters brought back the Polo 79 to serious acclaim. Perhaps it’s what alerted Driver – a known fan of watches – to Piaget’s renewed prominence.

For the first sighting, Driver is pure Hollywood-glam, raising pulses on the red carpet in a white evening jacket. Poking perfectly out from his cuff is the recently launched rose gold Polo Date 42mm in honour of Piaget’s 150th anniversary – as demure as it is currently trending on #watchtok.

And for the morning after the night before, the actor is all relaxed summer vibes. The sunnies are on and sleeves of his linen shirt rolled up to reveal a sporty steel Polo Chronograph with a panda green dial.

“The Polo is the perfect watch for Cannes,” says Fatemeh Laleh, Piaget’s image director. “It’s totally versatile and a true day night timepiece. The chocolate and rose gold dial was a better option for the red carpet, giving a perfect pop underneath his cream tuxedo. Whereas the all steel Piaget Polo Chronograph helps elevate his daytime for the press conferences.”

Laleh, whose role at Piaget is essentially to make the brand’s watches more appealing to a young demographic, seems to be on a winning run as both Brooklyn Beckham and Lil Nas X rocked Piaget pieces – new and vintage respectively – at the Met Gala earlier in the month.

“Driver’s authenticity, style and energy totally matches those of the icons of the Piaget Society back in the ’70s and ’80s,” adds Laleh. By that, she’s referring to the likes of Andy Warhol, Roger Moore, Elizabeth Taylor.

And less than a day after Driver did the Piaget double, fellow actor Joe Alwyn has been at it too, pairing an iconic Piaget Andy Warhol watch (a distinctive rounded-square piece the artist made famous) with his tux by night and another more classic steel Piaget Polo for his daytime suited and booted attire. Alwyn is in Cannes as the star of Yorgos Lanthimos new film, Kinds of Kindness. And as far as Piaget lovers are concerned, there can be no greater act of kindness than seeing four of the brand's most sought after watches on Driver and Alwyn's wrists in such quick succession.
