Duvet cover FAQs

Here we are answering some of the key questions when it comes to picking a duvet cover, from the low down on thread count to the best materials.

What does thread count mean for duvet covers and sheets?

Thread counts are used to measure the threads per square inch of cotton sheets, with higher thread count cotton duvet covers made from finer yarns that can lend your sheets a smoother feel. It's not to be mistaken for the cotton "fibre" of a duvet cover, which references the type of cotton it's constructed from. When it comes to cotton fibres, the longer the better, but it's worth noting that opting for premium quality can take away from some of the easy-care upshots of less luxurious polycotton.

What material is best for a duvet cover?

Cotton duvet covers tend to be the standard and can come in many different textures dependent not just on thread count but knit-types, such as waffle, or finishing details, including pin tucks. They can also be amplified by textural home accessories such as teddy fleece cushions and throws.

Linen is also an increasingly popular choice for Scandi and minimalist vibes in the bedroom, not to mention its ability to regulate body heat on stuffy nights despite a thicker feel than conventional cotton. And if you're worried it won't be comfortable enough, most linen bedding now rivals even cotton for that soft feel we all want.

For a more luxurious feel, silk is another bedding option that can be really beneficial to sleep on. Silk pillowcases are known to be a good option for your skin and hair, providing a smooth surface to sleep on that reduces any friction on the skin and frizzing of the hair, while it also has antibacterial properties which can prevent and reduce acne. For hot summer nights, silk also is naturally cooler, helping keep your sleeping environment from overheating.

Bamboo makes for another great duvet cover material, especially if you're looking for something temperature regulating. Its breathable properties make it ideal for hot sleepers, while its durable construction of it means it'll last you a long time and be easy to clean and keep clean. Many brands like Eve Sleep make their duvet covers from a blend of bamboo and linen, which is, in our opinion, the perfect combination for hot summer sleeping.

Will a good duvet cover help me sleep?

Quite frankly, there are so many factors that go into a good night's sleep that it's hard to tout duvet covers as a cure-all to insomnia. Have you tried Headspace and cutting out screen time an hour before bed? As with quality pillows and mattresses, a good duvet cover will contribute to slumber-enhancing comfort and regulate body temperature to zeds-optimising coolness.
