After two weeks of intense competition at the Paris 2024 Olympics, the Hollywood actor Tom Cruise delivered a spectacular performance at the closing ceremony on August 12. The USA topped the medal tally with 126 medals, followed by China with 91. At the closing ceremony, Cruise, known for his daring stunts, brought his signature energy to the grand finale, where Indian athletes celebrated their six-medal haul. His dramatic entrance, involving a breathtaking jump from the roof of the Stade de France, electrified the crowd of about 80,000 people.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass presented the actor with the Olympic flag. Cruise then disappeared beneath the stage, only to reappear moments later riding a motorcycle with the flag attached to the back of the vehicle. In a dramatic sequence, he rode through the stadium and into the streets of Paris before eventually riding onto an airplane.

The song By The Way by Red Hot Chili Peppers played as Cruise rode through the streets of Paris and onto a plane. The event then switched to a pre-recorded video showing Cruise skydiving down to the famous Hollywood sign, where he integrated the Olympic rings into the landmark to officially declare Los Angeles as the venue for the 2028 Games.

According to Economic Times and other reports, Tom Cruise charges anything between $1 million (approximately Rs 8 crore) to $2 million (approximately Rs 16 crore) to perform a stunt.

The ceremony also featured performances by renowned artists like Snoop Dogg, Billie Eilish, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dr. Dre, and H.E.R. Around 80,000 spectators and 8,200 athletes from over 200 delegations attended the event. At the closing ceremony, pistol shooter Manu Bhaker and Hockey goalkeeper PR Sreejesh were India's flag bearers.

While the Olympics have concluded, the Paralympics is expected to begin soon in Paris, on August 28. After winning 19 medals at the Tokyo Paralympics, India will send its largest contingent of 84 athletes to the upcoming Games.
