This means that you also need to have a strong knowledge of the latest trends and news, key players, investment opportunities, etc. Creating meaningful relationships with other colleagues, as well as journalists helps a lot. Sometimes, the key is to get in front of a certain brand or a person several times before you make a connection and start working together. Find your niche and stick to it, whether it's AI, women's health or food. The more niche you are, the better. When interviewing candidates for PR positions, I think it's always best to look for indications of how the PR interviewee might prioritize objectives in different stages of a campaign or project lifecycle. I believe that their answering how they "measure success" can indicate their understanding of the PR field, such as traditional vs. digital media, the importance of stakeholder engagement, and the integration of PR campaigns with other marketing or communication efforts. Allow me to suggest a great read, The Measurement Manifesto: A Practical Guide to Measuring Everything That Matters in Public Relations by Katie Paine (2015).

As a leader in digital communications, the best way to measure success is to set SMART objectives. Determine what it is you are trying to do for the business as a whole and prove the ROI. I often look at engagement and reach and measure quarter over quarter so I can adjust my sails if I need to to meet my overall goal.

When you need to handle a PR crisis, it is useful to consider a linear timeline. Pre-crisis planning should entail concrete steps of how to minimise any potential risks. In times of crisis, being able to respond immediately and having an action plan are unavoidable. You need to inform stakeholders about the current situation without delay. Your brief has to cover the potential implications and how your action plan will tackle these. You need to define a ’first response team’, e.g. the social media team. Not less important it is to define a ’crisis response team’ if the crisis escalates. This is key to assessing the crisis correctly and tailoring the right response while evaluating the legal implications of controlling damage.

In my experience, the best way to handle a PR crisis is before you have one. Pre-planning is key. Having elements such as a communication tree, talking points, designated media trained spokes personnel, and a prepared crisis communications plan is critical and will save time and reputation. It’s important to respect the golden hour rule, meaning you have one hour to respond to a crisis to save your reputation and control the narrative.

PR crisis moments are usually reactive situations. Any organisation, business or individual needs to consider what proactive steps they can take to mitigate the risk of a potential crisis, before the crisis. This can be done by building a robust communications plan or considering how to involve a PR consultant or agency to periodically review and update communications materials. Having robust media monitoring tools during the crisis moment is key to ensuring the situation is carefully managed. Liaising with key stakeholders is also essential to ensure there is accuracy in the handling of the situation and timeliness in response time.

I always use this question as an opportunity to highlight the importance of a culture fit. I choose to work with "good people." Being in a company of "good people" and on a team that's aligned and all marching towards the same mission can head off a lot of "crisis" before they happen. (As a mentor of mine likes to say "Most 'PR Crises' are really crises of culture or leadership.") Yes, use examples of past crises to illustrate your approach, but talk about the approach you apply to all similar situations and how you would apply those approaches within what you've learned of the organization and the types of crises they are likely to encounter.

In my view, situational based interviewing (eg “tell me about a time when…” is the most effective way of discerning someone’s abilities and culture fit. This can be accomplished by asking how they candidate handled challenging situations or problems in past jobs or internships; and their thought process generally. Formatting in the S-T-A-R approach eg Situation, Task, Action, and Results can enable the interviewer to assess the candidate efficiently. I’d direct candidates to have 3-5 go to situations formatted out to discuss, including at least a couple where you had to overcome a failure, setback, or ambiguity

I've interviewed hundreds of people for PR roles at various agencies. The single most impactful thing any interviewee could do is name-drop specific reporters with whom they've worked without being prompted. I'm not talking about blurting out a list of names they've seen or heard, but walking me through a campaign they worked on and including the names as they tell the story. That's a key indicator that this person is relationship-focused and understands media relations more deeply.

I think one of the most important questions must be: “What is your understanding of public relations?” And my answer to that would be: “To me, public relations is about building and maintaining beneficial relationships between an organization and its various stakeholders, including customers, employees, investors, and the wider community. It also involves strategic efforts to enhance the company’s reputation.”

I have interviewed many PRs over the years. I look for a mix of experience, understanding and problem solving.
