  • A Cherokee County School District student has been named a Gatorade Player of the Year! River Ridge High School senior Chris Asbridge is the 2023-24 Gatorade Georgia Boys Soccer Player of the Year, and he’s the first honoree for the sport to be chosen from River Ridge. A midfielder and forward, Chris helped lead the Knights varsity soccer team to a 21-1 record and the Class 6A state championship earlier this year, earning him the Region 6-AAAAAA Player of the Year award. He’s earned 25 goals and 13 assists so far in his high school varsity soccer career. The award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also “high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field.” A member of the Student Athlete Leadership Team (SALT), Chris volunteers as an elementary school mentor and youth soccer coach as well as with his church. The Cherokee County School Board and Superintendent Mary Elizabeth Davis at their next meeting will recognize the River Ridge soccer team as Class 6A state champions and Chris for earning Gatorade Player of the Year and Coach Phil Thomas for earning CCSD Coach of the Year. #CCSDElevateTheExcellence

  • Our Principals are dedicated leaders, and this month we’ll be introducing you to each of our school district’s new Principals. Please help us celebrate Principal Ken Nix, who this school year is leading Woodstock Middle School! Woodstock Middle School’s new leader brings experience as an educator and administrator to the role, plus one more special set of skills: he’s the dad of a current middle schooler, too. Principal Ken Nix is ready to kick off the new school year tomorrow with specific goals for success in mind. “I am excited about meeting and collaborating with the staff, students, and community members to create an environment that promotes academic excellence and personal growth,” the 21-year educator said. Principal Nix has set three top goals: “Foster and promote a positive school culture. Get to know staff and students and continue to build relationships with stakeholders. Give staff the tools and resources they need to maximize the learning process.” He sees family engagement as key to fostering a positive culture and improving student success. “Parents can be involved at WMS by being part of their child’s education and encouraging the learning process at home,” he said. “We also encourage parents to become active members of the PTSA, participate in volunteer opportunities, and attend student events as often as possible. I feel that the better the partnership between school and home, the better the school and the higher the student achievement across the board.” Principal Nix began his education career in Cobb County schools as a high school science teacher and joined CCSD in 2017 as an assistant principal and the athletic director for Etowah High School. He moved to River Ridge High School in 2021 to serve as an assistant principal there, overseeing the Career Pathway programs among other roles until his appointment to serve at Woodstock MS for this school year. He earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Florida State University, his master’s degree in educational leadership from Kennesaw State University, and his specialist degree in instructional technology from Valdosta State University. He additionally earned an educational leadership degree from Columbus State University, as well as Mindset certification and has been tapped to serve on numerous district advisory committees. Principal Nix and his wife, Kelly, are parents to one middle school student, who attends school in CCSD. #CCSDElevateTheExcellence
