Summer intern spotlight: River Merkel Growing up in a family where hard work was a part of life, it's not hard to see where River Merkel gets his drive. Since childhood, River's Dad operated a landscaping company, and he remembers how hard he worked to provide for his family. "I'm the first person in my family to go to college. My Dad instilled a strong work ethic in us, so I take after him that way," River shared. River graduated high school in 2018 and went to UT Austin, initially majoring in biology. He realized the medical field was not his desired path, so he transferred to UT Arlington, then to LSU where he graduates in 2026 with a BA in Construction Management. "I chose to get into construction because I knew that's where I'd be the happiest. I've done excavation work before, and I always felt accomplished clearing land, seeing the development go up, and later driving by and saying, 'Hey, I did that!' With Cummings Electrical, I'll be able to drive by a finished project one day and know that I had a hand in making that happen," said River. During his time at Cummings, River has seen a clear path to becoming a Superintendent in the future. He enjoys being in the field, working alongside the crew, and being a part of a process that will create something big together. In addition to setting his sights on being a Superintendent, River wants to start his own company eventually. River has received some wisdom from his mentor that will carry with him through his career. "My mentor, Matt Bubela, has been a great teacher. He told me it‘s important to be proactive and always try to be of service to what the field requires to get a job done. Working alongside each other and making sure the team, the project, and the company are successful," says River. River spends time planning his upcoming wedding when not pursuing his professional goals. "I'm getting married in October. That's where I see myself: having a family, having a career, building a house, and settling down. The American dream with the white picket fence," River says with a smile. River also loves to hunt, go fishing with his fiancé, and travel any chance he gets. #cummingselectrical #teamcummings #morethanajob

In this week’s “People in Construction” series we feature Leonel Lopez with Cummings Electrical and the value of teamwork, communication, and feedback: “You learn a lot of things in construction, but I think the number one thing is teamwork because we are together all the time—and teamwork means communication. I think that’s good because these aren’t just skills you need at your job, you’re going to need them in your life. I like being part of a team. I feel encouraged to ask for help if I need it, and I also ask for feedback. When my supervisor says, ‘Hey, you did a good job!’ I'm like, ‘Thank you so much!’ That makes me feel good. It means a lot to get praise.” #TheLeanBuilder #RespectforPeople #PeopleInConstruction #Construction #Teamwork #Communication #Feedback #Praise #Electrical

August can be sweltering, making PPE uncomfortable to wear. This discomfort can tempt workers to remove their PPE, but hazards don't disappear because it's hot. Removing PPE increases the risk of injury. To stay cool, workers should take frequent breaks for water and shade. Wearing lighter, loose-fitting, moisture-wicking clothes in lighter colors can also help keep cool. Make it safe, make it home! #cummingselectrical #safety #PPE #teamcummings

Summer intern spotlight: Franklin Saucedo Franklin (Frank) Saucedo, who currently attends the University of Texas at Arlington, has served our country, his family, and most recently, our company as an intern in our summer program! Frank has always been interested in electrical construction and the fundamentals of electricity, doing electrical work on generators and industrial equipment when he was younger. The several years he spent in the military gave him expertise in military aerospace ground equipment (AGE) as a craftsman, with a main airframe specialty in the Air Force F-35A. After transitioning out of the military and with a growing family, Frank knew how important it would be to work for a company and in an industry that offers job security. "I have found my military knowledge helpful here at Cummings during my internship. It has been a pleasure to be a part of such an amazing team of professionals in the office and the field," shares Frank. Frank shares that one of the best pieces of advice from his mentor was to be a sponge, absorb as much as possible, and not be afraid of the unknown. This advice resonated with him because he believes the more you know, the more you can be an asset to a team. "My mentor also told me it's essential to avoid making premeditated decisions about entering a different department or thinking you are not up for a task. It would help if you were open-minded. You never know; you may find yourself interested in a whole new world," Frank said. Frank's goal over the next ten years is a testament to his unwavering commitment to growth, learning, and leadership. He understands the continuous demand for exceptional leaders and hopes to set an example for others. His summer will be focused on continuing to further his education and gaining more work experience, all in pursuit of his dreams. His free time involves quality time with his family and indulging in his passion for cooking meat on the smoker, showing his dedication to both his professional and personal life. Cummings Electrical is proud of Frank, the work he has done here, and being a part of his education. We look forward to seeing all that he will accomplish after graduation! #teamcummings #cummingselectrical #internship #morethanajob

Cummings Electrical is excited to announce that we have been awarded a 1.2-million-dollar skills development grant through the Texas Workforce Commission in partnership with Tarrant County College (TCC). We were one of two companies in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex to receive this honor. This grant reflects our dedication to excellence in delivering world-class training and our commitment to the development of our employees. The Skills Development Fund is Texas' leading job-training program, offering customized training opportunities for Texas businesses and workers to enhance their workforce's skill levels and wages. The program is managed by the Texas Workforce Commission and funded by appropriations from the Texas Legislature. Its success results from collaboration among businesses, public community and technical colleges, Workforce Development Boards, and economic development partners. Through our strategic partnership with TCC, the 12-month grant will empower us to provide job training to 200 new hires and 439 existing apprentices, tradespeople, and journeymen electricians. It encompasses 146 classes across 11 course categories, offering education that equips employees with foundational knowledge, essential skills, and national electrical code guidance crucial on a commercial construction site. The training covers diverse areas, including first aid/CPR, energized hot work, and preparation for journeyman electrician licensure, thereby creating opportunities for career progression within the company. “Winning such a significant grant award is a major achievement that requires countless hours of hard work to attain and receive. I am proud of our training team and the numerous employees who will benefit from it. We feel privileged to be one of only two recipients locally. We are dedicated to making the most of this opportunity to create a lasting impact on our employees, customers, and community,” shared Cummings Electrical Owner and CEO Tim Cummings. To date, Cummings has utilized this grant by delivering 36 classes to 377 employees and conducting 2,976 hours of training for new apprentice electricians. The benefits this funding provides will continue to strengthen our workforce, help us deliver unparalleled quality for our customers, and pave the way for future growth. #cummingselectrical #traininganddevelopment #morethanajob #skillsdevelopment #TCC #texasworkforcecommission
