Architects Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich designed a home for the Tugendhat family in 1929. Located in Brno, Czech Republic, the villa is a celebrated example of functionalist architecture, featuring austere concrete construction, exterior walls of glass, and open interiors filled with natural light. A work of total architecture, Mies also specified everything for the interior, from light switches to furnishings. One of the pieces he designed, used in several rooms of the house, was the Feder-Sessel (“spring chair” in English) that became known as the Tugendhat Chair. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s commitment to steel, glass, stone, and open choreography of space never wavered. Whether he was designing a chair, a villa, or a skyscraper, he consistently gave grandeur and elegance to the end user. For clients Greta and Fritz Tugendhat, Mies specified all interior contents—from light switches to furniture—for the villa he and Lilly Reich designed, resulting in a work of total architecture. One of the pieces he created for that home was the Tugendhat™ Chair, an eloquent form perfectly distilled to its essential elements. Therein lies the genius of Mies. Offering a mix of playfulness and elegance, the Tugendhat™ Chair by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is back in production. Offered in a choice of fabric or leather, and with customizable leather straps, the Tugendhat fits seamlessly within the interior that hosts it. Originally designed in 1929—the same year Mies designed the Barcelona® Chair—the Tugendhat invites relaxation with its cantilevered frame and thick comfortable cushions. Unlike the Barcelona, which holds the body in one position, the Tugendhat invites movement and ease as it gently bounces with the sitter.
