Is this a SCAM? Of all the funny inside jokes that enriched this year’s D&AD Shift Germany program, this one is still my favorite. It started when this year’s Shifters met last year’s Shifters and it turned out that many of them were thinking the exact same thing when they first applied. Which was basically some version of: how could this program actually be real? Reflecting on the end of Shift Germany 2024 and how mind-blowingly proud I am of our 19 Shift graduates, one thing that stands out to me is how unique the Shift program really is. In a world where conventional educational access is too often a (wildly arbitrary) barrier to career success, for 9 years D&AD Shift has been training creative adults without a university degree to work at the highest levels of the design and advertising industry. Shift is now offered in 5 (!!) places around the world. There are nearly 250 Shift alumni globally. And, after working with my co-pilot Sandra Bogdanovic and the D&AD team in London over the last 7 months to plan and deliver the 2nd of edition of Shift Germany and everything it has to offer, I can assure you that this program is most definitely real 😅😅 It has been a massive pleasure spending so much time with these 19 future creative superstars over the duration of Shift. I know they’re going to do big things in the industry (note to industry: hire them!). Equally, it’s been a lot of fun collaborating with the people of Germany’s creative world, which is full of some really cool, committed and caring individuals without whom Shift could not exist. Thanks to D&AD for giving me the opportunity to lead this program and to learn a lot about myself in the process. Some pics of our big Showcase night at SoundCloud attached (📸: Peter Mate).
