Look at how Zion comes to work. Very mindful. Very demure.😌 It’s #NationalDogDay and we would like to introduce you to The Bonner Academy’s very own certified therapy dog, Zion!🐾🐕🦺 Zion comes to work a few days a week with his handler, Monica, who is a Group Supervisor at The Bonner Academy. Zion is a 2.5 year old labradoodle, who recently celebrated one year of being a licensed therapy dog! Therapy dogs receive special certification to help other people alongside their handler, which is different from service dogs – who are trained to help their handler with specific tasks. Zion got his license from the Alliance of Therapy Dogs! A typical work day for Zion includes anything from participating in group therapy sessions with his mom to helping students emotionally regulate through play time, cuddles, pets, and treats.🥰 One of Zion’s favorite tasks is to interact with the students through a team building activity utilizing a tennis ball to get everyone up, moving and interacting with one another! The students rate Zion’s work performance very highly, “He helps me with my anxiety and anger issues,” One student shared. “He is fluffy, cute and a nice dog.” We agree! One student perfectly captured Zion’s likeness in a drawing recently, as you can see in the photo.📸 When Zion enters a room, he likes to walk from person to person to greet everyone and brighten their day⭐ Off duty, Zion likes to have fun like all good boys. His favorite activities include long walks, swimming, and chewing on bones. Zion loves to meet new people, if you see Zion, he would love to say hello! The Bonner Academy is The Buckeye Ranch’s very own non-public charter school, providing integrated mental health and educational programming for students with mental health symptoms that affect their ability to function in their assigned school setting, home setting, and community.    The Bonner Academy program focuses on both behavioral and academic goals, building upon students’ existing strengths. Our students learn to manage symptoms and increase their level of functioning and stability, with the ultimate goal of equipping them to be able to successfully return to and thrive in their home school district.    The program also provides access to clinicians that give 24-hour, on-call crisis support for the students after hours.    To learn more about The Bonner Academy, visit: bit.ly/BonnerAcademy   

At The Buckeye Ranch, we work to be responsive to real-time needs in our community. Our Somali Outreach Program was born a few years ago when our Education-Based Mental Health team noticed the community need to provide our growing population of Somali youth and families in our community with culturally sensitive support.     The program offers access to Somali-speaking case managers to provide support for navigating loss, trauma, and resettlement, as well as issues common to the process of merging cultures.    Our Somali Outreach Program connects Somali families to community resources, provides acculturation services to the Somali community in Franklin County, and connects youth and families and service providers that provide culturally sensitive care to Somali clients and patients!    To learn more, visit: bit.ly/TBRSOMALIOUTREACH 

In the wake of a recent tragedy in our community that left three children without guardians, the top priority is to keep the siblings together and in an environment that is familiar with kinship care. We know that when safe, keeping children in their communities with caregivers they are familiar with increases their stability and reduces trauma for youth that are already experiencing a crisis scenario within their family. Our VP of Child Welfare Services, Lindsay Williams, spoke with WCMH-TV, NBC4, nbc4i.com yesterday, about the importance of kinship care, and how it can provide a family-like dynamic and maintain normalcy for youth in challenging circumstances, “When they have a trusted adult supporter in their life, that helps children maintain a sense of stability and wanted-ness and belonging during those challenging times. It can have a huge impact on their life and development going forward.” TW: the following news article discusses suicide Read more: bit.ly/TBR-NBC4-Kinship If kinship care isn't possible, we turn towards foster care placement - but the search for a kinship placement does not end there. We continue to search for a placement that will keep the youth as close to their family as possible whenever safe.  The Buckeye Ranch supports kinship care through our Permanent Family Solution Network program and provides support in placement through our Foster Care program.  Kinship caregivers are also eligible to become licensed foster caregivers to continue to be a light for other youth in our community who need it.
