New working paper with bocar ba and Meghna Baskar, and in collaboration with Mallory Sepler-King, is now out on National Bureau of Economic Research! This is a fun one. When do people think a police response is necessary, versus when do they think an alternative response would be acceptable, or even preferable? Does educating people about community-based alternatives to police service affect these choices? We find that educating people about alternative resources results in statistically significant decreases in likelihood to rely on police in every scenario for which alternatives exist, while increasing likelihood to rely on police for urgent, violent crises. Findings hold across the political spectrum, and respondents educated about police alternatives are significantly more likely to know that the 988 government hotline is available for suicide and mental health crises in a follow-up survey conducted six months after our initial experiment, highlighting the bipartisan and long-lasting impact of these educational efforts. https://lnkd.in/e5tkZnfM

Here are 5 talking points based on the report of the intensive: 1. The program provided a 4-week course called "The Four-Fold Way" focused on the paths of the Warrior, Healer, Visionary, and Teacher to help participants deal with trauma. The course incorporated tai chi, breathing exercises, discussion, and experiential activities. 2. The goal was to help participants, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, learn to regulate stress and their responses to stress. The program aimed to build compassion between people from different backgrounds. 3. Participants reported feeling less isolated, more resilient, and more capable of coping with past trauma. They felt more connected to their community and willing to reach out to neighbors. 4. The organizers believe including police, counselors, and city/county staff would help them better understand and empathize with disadvantaged community members. This could build trust and lead to more restorative practices. 5. The program was community-based and brought people together through shared movement and breathing exercises. Participants reported increased empathy, reduced stigma, and a sense of collective wisdom and care. I want to highlight the excellent proactive work at OCSD! The Sheriff’s Department is triaging non-violent and non-criminal behavioral health and homeless-related calls for service and diverting them to OC Links, the 24-hour, 7 days a week Behavioral Health Line. The roughly 10,000 calls for service each year involving mental health and other non-criminal issues will be evaluated by trained OC Links navigators, who will dispatch the appropriate counselor to the scene. The counselors will respond to the scene and could still request police or fire to assist if the situation changes. This is a win-win. Diverting these calls makes deputies more readily available for in-progress crimes and proactive policing— keeping our communities safer!
