2023 was a fantastic year. We celebrated our fifth anniversary, revamped our mission statement, got clear on our strategies, gained new clients and team members, and helped our fabulous clients grow their businesses along the way. 🥰 And we’re not done yet! It was such an amazing session. Where I felt part of a team and engaged by caring leadership Cyntressa Dickey brings such energy and all the good vibes. In just one year’s time, we had a complete staff turnover. 🤯 It was brutal. 🥵 I learned a lot in that time, and the main thing was this: never compromise your values. 💯 You can find many skilled individuals in the world but that doesn’t make them the right person for your organization. ❌ 📝📥📓Despite knowing the HR rules, employment and labor laws, and best practices for hiring and retention, we did not get our culture right until I got clear about my personal values: innovation, candor, growth, volunteerism, independence. 🚀🙏🏼🤨 From there, I was able to finally articulate how I show my values in my work, and thus, how they show up in our organization if I am leading from my authentic place: 1. We challenge the status quo. 2. We are lovingly candid. 3. We value intentional growth. 4. We give back. 5. We believe in freedom. Our next step is to refine these further as an aligned group who agrees with these basic tenets. We will start by considering the specific examples of how they show up in our day to day lives and specifically identifying the people within our community (team, clients, vendors, referral partners) who demonstrate each of them. Start small. Start with you. 🙋 What do you value? How does that show up in your work? Do you see similarities with the people closest to you in life? 🤔 Does your team share these tenets or are you constantly wondering where their motivation comes from and why they don’t enthusiastically show to win every day? 🙃

Happy Sunday! It's a new week, so let's start it off on a positive note! Each week here at Donnelly's we highlight one of our Fundamentals. What are our Fundamentals? They are behaviors that define the actions we, as a company take, to build a culture of excellence and to ensure Donnelly’s stands for excellence in service and technical ability within our community. Our Operations Manager, Terell W., lets you know how you can, also, embrace this week's Fundamental: Honoring Commitments! "When I think about Honoring Commitments, I first think about how much others can trust me. I wonder: Can others count on me? Do I do the things I say I'll do? Do people trust me to keep my promises? These are good questions to ask ourselves about how well we keep our promises to others. But, we forget to ask one very important person the same questions. That person is, YOU! What if we started asking ourselves these questions? What would we say if we asked, can I trust myself? Or, do I do the things I say I'll do for myself? Keeping promises to others is very important, especially in a successful business. In the businesses I have seen or read about, the people not only keep their promises to others but also to themselves. I challenge you this week to think about the promises you made to yourself but didn't keep. I want you to forgive yourself and be kind, then promise again. If you keep one promise to yourself this week or make progress on that promise, Reward yourself! You earned it! Keeping promises is a way of life. In my experience, the better I am at keeping promises to myself, the better I am at keeping promises to others!"

I paused after reading this, the 3rd entry from Jeff Pope's “Ten Things I Think I’ve Learned.” I personally have spent most of my Insights career at large companies, and of course I started small (Jeff and Judy’s CRI). To me the leadership and culture—direct and at the top levels—is more important than the size of the company. I love the global reach, R&D power, breadth of offers, etc. that I find at large company Ipsos. But I see Jeff’s point, and am interested in how others see the topic. ************************* For me, it’s been easier to find what I wanted in small companies. I’ve worked for two of the largest organizations in the world (KPMG Peat Marwick and Pillsbury) and two small firms (CRI and Elrick & Lavidge, my first job). Experience in the big companies was valuable, but it wasn’t where I wanted to invest my life. I like life in a small company where you can… * Know everyone’s name * Understand the whole business * Know and see how your contribution makes a difference And working with large, well known clients give us the best of both worlds: we have impact on highly visible products and services, but we get to work within a small company environment.
