"Black drivers are six times more likely to be stopped than white drivers," said Loren Jones, Director of Criminal Legal Systems for the non-profit group Impact for Equity. "Overall, the practice of stopping someone for a traffic violation is not unconstitutional, but when there’s a racial bias behind it, as we can see from the data, that’s when the constitutionality is called into question." https://lnkd.in/gU6Tfuyg

There have been at least 80 school shootings in the United States so far this year, as of December 6, more than in any year since 2008. More than one per week. Twenty-nine of those were on college campuses and the remaining 51 were on K-12 school grounds. The incidents have left at least 37 people dead and more than 88 injured. Lawsuits over some of these school shootings have been filed against the school districts. Two such suits: 1) against the Broward County School District in FL was settled for $26.25 million; and 2) The Uvalde, TX elementary school shooting has also resulted in a lawsuit against the school district. #insurance #underwriting #insuranceindustry #reinsurance #schools

New op-ed in Newsweek this week from the University of Chicago Crime Lab: America saw one of the largest declines in gun violence on record last year. Partly, that's because the surge of murders during the COVID-19 pandemic was so high that last year's drop returned us to a "normal" baseline, but in some cities, lives are being saved for another reason: a new idea. For the first time, the federal government has put real money behind community violence intervention (CVI) programs and is working to raise awareness of community violence. CVI is the most important idea that people either don't know about or don't understand. That needs to change. Read the full op-ed from Charlie Beck and University of Chicago Crime Lab’s Dr. Jens Ludwig and Dr. Chico Tillmon: https://lnkd.in/gcS2NhW7 Learn more about our CVI Leadership Academy: https://lnkd.in/g2KCUgqK

https://lnkd.in/eNjmB8J4 While you were emersed in the Ukraine/Russia War, the Hamas/Israeli War, and the spectacle of a possible reelection of Donald Trump - MURDER was happening all across this country. The disturbing part is that this phenomenon has become so commonplace that it is no longer NEWSWORTHY. According to this report, police in the US killed at least 1,232 people last year, making 2023 the deadliest year for homicides committed by law enforcement in more than a decade. Additionally, eight of the 100 largest police departments in the United States—Reno, NV; Oklahoma City, OK; Santa Ana, CA; Anaheim, CA; St. Louis City, MO; Scottsdale, AZ; Hialeah, FL; and Madison, WI—kill black men at higher rates than the U.S. murder rate. Defunding the police IS NOT an option. However, eliminating those officers and the leaders who have permitted/condoned/covered up the use of deadly force should be at the forefront of the discussion. We again turn our gaze back to those "civic" organizations who solicit our donations and memberships; pledging to stand in the gap between the law and the citizens of this country.
2023 saw record killings by US police. Who is most impacted?

Senseless act of violence. Cowards hide behind weapons. It is easier to use your words than resort to violence. I understand mental health issues, I do not understand senseless acts of violence such as this. The names of the victims have not been released yet, which is respectful to the families and victims. If you see something, say something. After Pulse (I went there a few times, 12 days before the shooting) I took an Active Shooter Response class from Blue Spears Solutions. I encourage everyone to educate themselves so fear does not take over your thought processes. Flee, hide in a place as bullet proof as possible...and if all else fails and you know you may not get out alive, then you go down fighting. It is difficult to picture the scenario...sometimes training kicks in...we should all have the training. Fire extinguishers can be used to blind the shooter (pull, aim, squeeze and sweep)...then you knock the pee out of them with the canister. In a bathroom...use the top of the water tank and knock them over the head with it. Look around you...even a stethoscope can become a whip or be used around someone's neck, I know because I have seen a person use it against healthcare providers...which means we need to stop carrying them around on our necks. CPI Crisis Prevention Intervention should be standard for all hospital employees if you ask me.
“The unfolding tragedy in Lewiston continues to strike fear in a community now forever scarred by a senseless act of gun violence that killed and injured people simply going about everyday activities. ENA shares in the grief felt by so many, while also offering its gratitude to all of the first responders and emergency care team members providing support to their neighbors during this difficult time.” - ENA President Terry Foster | #ENATogether https://lnkd.in/gukj9VWr

Heartening news. Gratitude to all who advocated for this. “Today, our nation’s highest court maintained the lifesaving legal policy preventing those subject to Domestic Violence Restraining Orders (DVROs) from having firearms. Domestic violence organizations remain steadfast sources of support for any Californian needing safety planning and legal advocacy, including assistance requesting a DVRO. The ruling acknowledges that guns must be kept away from people who commit acts of domestic violence, as they have been proven to increase lethality in abusive situations: A woman is five times more likely to be killed if the intimate partner causing her harm has access to a firearm. In particular, Black women are twice as likely to be shot and killed by an intimate partner in comparison to white women. Gun violence and domestic violence also affect the broader community: 50% of mass shootings included the murder of an intimate partner and over 2/3 of mass shootings have a connection to domestic violence.” Statement by California Partnership to End Domestic Violence https://lnkd.in/gagZ8CJ2
