What to know about moving in Houston

Interstate moves can be pricey, ranging from $2,000 for shorter moves to $12,000 or more for longer moves.1 It all depends on your home size, moving distance, and time of year. While professional full-service moves are the easiest option, they’ll also cost you the most. If you need to save money on your move, look into a container moving company or a DIY moving truck rental.
If you’re moving out of state, the average moving timeline is between 10 and 14 days. But it all depends on time of year and moving distance. Shorter moves can arrive within three days, but longer routes can take up to three weeks—especially during the peak moving season of late spring and summer. Plan ahead by asking for a moving timeline when you get quotes from different moving companies.

If you’re looking to donate household goods, Houston’s Salvation Army will take your gently used items off your hands. If you’d like to donate furniture, local organizations like the Houston Furniture Bank and Out of the Closet Thrift Stores will pick up your furniture from your home (though they may charge a small fee).

On average, monthly utilities in Texas cost $356.53 (for electricity, gas, water, TV streaming services, and broadband internet).2

Houston’s cost of living averages out to $1502, making it the 51st most expensive city in the United States.3
