Tropics 081124

A broad area of low pressure near the Antilles islands is expected to develop into a tropical depression or storm within the next few days, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Located about 1,000 miles east of the Lesser Antilles, the system was producing increasingly organized showers and thunderstorms Sunday morning, hurricane forecasters said in a 7 a.m. update.

Forecasters said environmental conditions appear conducive for gradual development and those with interests in the Lesser and Greater Antilles should monitor the system's progression. It does not pose an immediate threat to Louisiana.

Forecasters gave the system a 70% chance of forming within the next two days and a 90% chance within the next week.
