Euro 2024 preview: Spain vs. England odds, prediction, best bet

Spain is on a historic run right now with 14 wins, one draw and one loss over the last calendar year. La Roja have returned to the elite ranks of European football following a series of tournament failures from 2014 to 2018. Luis de la Fuente's squad has looked unstoppable in Germany thus far, and now, only one win stands in its way of a record fourth European Championship triumph.

England, on the other hand, is desperate to lift silverware in a major tournament under Gareth Southgate. The Three Lions have come close on numerous occasions with 2018 World Cup semifinal and 2020 Euro final appearances. Now, Southgate's squad finds itself in another final with a chance to win its first trophy since the 1966 World Cup.

Let’s take a closer look at the odds and trends ahead of this highly anticipated clash:

Spain vs. England

Time/TV: Sunday, July 14 at 2 p.m. CT (Fox)

Location: Olympiastadion Berlin in Berlin, Germany

Moneyline: Spain +145 | Draw +180 | England +240

Preview

It's no surprise to see either team in this position. England (+300) was the pre-tournament favorite and Spain was one of five teams with shorter than 10/1 odds to win the competition. These two countries have combined to go unbeaten (nine wins, three draws) at the 2024 Euros, scoring 20 goals and giving up just seven. Suffice it to say they're in sensational form at the moment.

De la Fuente sets his side up in a basic 4-3-3 (or 4-2-3-1), which allows Spain to be tactically flexible. La Roja are perfectly capable of suffocating opponents with possession and constant chance creation. However, the talent that their wide forwards possess also makes it possible for Spain to counter clinically.

Lamine Yamal — the tournament's youngest-ever scorer at just 16 years old — and Nico Williams have run the attack brilliantly for such young stars. Alvaro Morata and Dani Olmo also bring experience in the goalscoring department, which makes La Roja even more threatening in the final third.

Barring an offensive onslaught from either team in the third-place game, Spain will finish as the top-scoring team at Euro 2024 with 13 goals to its name. It's largely thanks to the chance creation of the aforementioned wide men and the clinicality of the starting XI.

Meanwhile, England has struggled to create clear-cut scoring chances in recent months. The Three Lions have managed just 68 attempts, which pales in comparison to Spain's 108, across six games.

This is largely by design, though, as not committing too many bodies forward as often as some would like has resulted in Southgate's squad being one of the most defensively sound teams at Euro 2024. England doesn't concede many chances, which has led to opponents getting up just 17 shots on Jordan Pickford's goal across six games thus far. A majority of those came from Denmark, who sprayed seven shots on frame in one game alone.

At its core, it seems this match will favor both teams with La Roja controlling the tempo with possession and the Three Lions happy to sit back and defend. However, this tactical tug-of-war will be much more complex with England looking to get on the front foot at times, especially early, given its newfound confidence.

There is more quality in this match than perhaps any in the tournament thus far, which is fitting for a major European final. Both teams have shown some incredible resiliency to reach this stage. There is world-class talent in nearly every position — including the bench — and there truly isn't much to separate the two sides on paper.

I like this one to go to penalties where England will complete its redemption arc. The Three Lions are much deeper and more adept at spot kicks than they were four years ago, as they've shown already at Euro 2024.

Prediction

Spain 1-1 England (England wins on penalties)
