How are MLB Power Rankings calculated?

Our MLB power rankings go way beyond the standings and records. Updated every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday during the baseball season, these rankings are based off a combination of schedule and statistics over a rolling 20-game period (if we're only 10 games into a regular season, we pull the last 10 games from the previous year, too).

Using all the data we showcase in our MLB betting trends, matchup reports, and stat breakdown pages, we compile a bevy of MLB statistics to create a power number for each squad. That number includes runs per game, hits, walks, and the defensive/pitching equivalents for each mark. Once that power number is created it’s combined with strength of schedule to achieve the final rating.

These are all objective, statistics-based power rankings. But, that doesn't mean I entirely agree with them. Here's how I feel about our current MLB power rankings:

What's My Number 1 Team in MLB Power Rankings?

I'm back on the Los Angeles Dodgers after the amazing trade deadline they had. The Phillies had a brief stint as my top team, but after LA brought in Jack Flaherty, Tommy Edman, and Michael Kopech on deadline day I've changed back.

While injuries to Mookie Betts and Yoshinobu Yamamoto have pulled the Dodgers slightly back to the pack, they're still running away with the NL West. With Flaherty and Edman in, the Dodgers are built to get to the playoffs (when Betts and Yamamoto will return) and turn back into the juggernaut come October.

The Dodgers were my big trade deadline winners and are rightfully a top team in World Series odds.

Most Overrated Team: Oakland Athletics

The Athletics have been top-three in our power rankings for the last few weeks, and I'm still bamboozled by it.

Oakland is still last place in the AL West, they're 'just' 6-4 in their last 10, and they've got the third-worst run differential in the AL. The A's are also bottom-five in both team batting average and ERA.

Sportsbooks are much better at ranking out Oakland, with the Athletics coming in at 30th in World Series odds at +100000. I don't care how competent the A's have been lately, this team still sucks.

Most Underrated Team: Baltimore Orioles

Why in the world is the No. 4 team in our World Series odds ranking out this low in the power rankings?

I don't care that Baltimore is 12-13 in July (that's not even THAT bad), there's no justification for this ranking.

They're still in contention for the best record in baseball and are MLB's best run line team too (+14.8 units). Add in the deadline additions of Zach Eflin, Trevor Rogers, Seranthony Dominguez, Gregory Soto, and Eloy Jimenez — this team is built to win. They're a title contender not a power rankings bottom feeder.
