Do you love anime characters who get really, really enthusiastic about their favorite thing? Then you probably like anime characters who are fanboys.

Anime fan boys aren't always boys - they're people of any gender who are totally obsessed with a person, topic, or piece of media. Sometimes, these obsessions can be endearing, but other times, they can come off as creepy or overbearing. How is this different from fangirls? Fangirls are also obsessed with their subject or person of choice, but it plays out differently. Think, knowing all the trivia about your favorite idol versus shipping them with all of their bandmates, and you have the difference between fanboys and fangirls. Not to say that fanboys never have romantic or even sexual feelings toward their subjects, or that fangirls don't know a whole lot of information about them, but the overall focus is different. Are these definitions based on gendered stereotypes? Totally, but it is what it is.

There are examples of these characters in everything from shonen series like One Piece and My Hero Academia to slice of life shows like Princess Jellyfish. Which ones are you a fan of? Be sure to vote them up!

Izuku Midoriya - 'My Hero Academia'

Ever since he was a little boy, Izuku Midoriya has been totally obsessed with superheroes - especially All Might, who is widely recognized as the world's greatest hero. His dream is to be accepted into U.A. High School and become a hero himself. That dream seems completely out of reach until he impresses his idol during a chance encounter, and ends up becoming the heir to his powerful quirk.

Once Izuku is well on the road to becoming a hero himself, he still retains his obsession with all things hero. He also continues to idolize All Might even after he gets to know him as a person.

  • Ever since he met Luffy in Loguetown, Bartolomeo has been absolutely obsessed with him. Not only does meeting Luffy inspire him to become a pirate himself, he also has a ship that looks almost exactly like Luffy's ship, Going Merry. He even calls it Going Luffy-senpai, a nod to both the ship's name and to the person he worships.

  • Zoe Hange - 'Attack On Titan'

Zoe Hange is one of the few non-male examples on this list. When it comes to Titans, they turn into a total fanboy. Sure, they want to know everything there is to know about the creatures in order to properly deal with the danger they pose to humanity, but that doesn't explain their rapturous excitement at the idea of performing experiments on them. Most other members of the Survey Corps see Hange's obsession as weird but still respect the skill and expertise they bring to the group.

  • Teru Mikami - 'Death Note'

It might seem like a bit of a dismissal to call Teru Mikami's obsession with Kira fanboy behavior - but it's also pretty accurate. At first, Mikami is obsessed with justice in general - a reasonable preoccupation for a prosecuting attorney, but he takes it to the extreme. When he's approached by Kira to participate in his plot, Mikami's obsession with justice expands to include Kira, the "god" he dedicates his energy to serving.

He gets so into writing names down in the Death Note that he literally looks like he's having an orgasm - if that's not an obsession, nothing is.

Atsuko "Akko" Kagari - 'Little Witch Academia'

Atsuko "Akko" Kagari - 'Little Witch Academia'

Akko's fixation on the famous witch Shiny Chariot is essentially the same thing as Izuku Midoriya's obsession in All Might in My Hero Academia. Ever since she was a little girl, she loved Shiny Chariot and displayed that love by putting up posters of her in her room. She wanted to become a witch just like her idol, which is the main reason why she applies for Luna Nova Magical Academy - her idol is an instructor there.

While Akko's enthusiasm propels her through difficult times, it also means that she doesn't have a realistic perception of witches, and is engrossed in her fantasies at the expense of what's actually happening, which can cause trouble for those around her.

  • Shimura Shinpachi - 'Gintama'

Shinpachi Shimura is usually a fairly normal person compared to the rest of the cast of Gintama, but he turns into a total maniac when it comes to his idol, Tsuu Terakado. He runs a militaristic fanclub dedicated to worshipping her, which is called Terakado Tsuu's Imperial Guards. The group has 99 different rules, which include everything from a ban on actually having a girlfriend to requiring members to attend all of Tsuu's concerts even if it's the date of their parents' funeral - though Shinpachi would bend the rules for himself if his own sister passed.

Hey, he can't control anything about his buckwild coworkers, so he's got to get his energy out somewhere.

    Takehito Morokuzu - 'Prison School'

    Takehito Morokuzu - 'Prison School'

Takehito Morokuzu, also known as Gakuto, is one of the five boys locked up in the prison contained in Hachimitsu Private Academy. Like another character on this list, he's obsessed with The Three Kingdoms - an account of Chinese military history. He's also into any video games, books, anime, manga, or merchandise that has anything to do with that subject.

He'll risk not only getting expelled from school but also his own reputation if it means getting ahold of a limited edition figure or a new release. Seriously, the dude once soiled himself in front of his entire class as part of a plot to escape and acquire a figure. That's some serious dedication.

Akane Kashiwazaki - 'Run With The Wind'

      • Production I.G.

Akane Kashiwazaki, also known as Ouji, is completely obsessed with all things manga. While most people reading this can probably relate to loving anime and manga, Ouji takes it to the extreme. His tiny room is littered with stacks and stacks of manga, leaving no space for anything else except his bed. He eventually makes room for a treadmill, which he uses while reading manga. That Haiji manages to convince him to dedicate time to running instead of nonstop manga indulgence is nothing short of a miracle.

    Mayaya - 'Princess Jellyfish'

If you want to listen to someone talk for approximately a thousand years about the Records of Three Kingdoms, go to the Amars apartment complex and find Mayaya. The Records, which is a historical account of three Chinese kingdoms, Cao Wei, Shu Han, and Eastern Wu, is her absolute favorite subject, and she somehow manages to twist just about every conversation into an opportunity to spout facts about it.

Her best friend Banba has a similar fixation with trains and train schedules, and they both seem perfectly happy just talking at each other about their favorite subjects.

Tomoya Aki - 'Saekano: How To Raise A Boring Girlfriend'

Tomoya Aki's biggest passion in life is dating sims - in fact, he loves them so much that he wants to make one himself. He has little creative or technical talent of his own, but he does have a vague idea and a whole lot of enthusiasm. That enthusiasm proves contagious - he somehow manages to rope a professional writer, artist, and musician into participating. He actually does finish the project, which shows the positive side of the fanboy mentality.

    Toby Lola - 'Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's'

Toby Lola (known as Toby Tredwell in the dub) is a particularly sad example of an obsession gone too far. He attended The New Domino City Duel Academy alongside Aki Izayoi (Akiza Izinski) and started idolizing her when he discovered that she had psychic dueling abilities that were more powerful versions of his own.

When he asked Aki what he could do to be like her, she referred him to the Arcadia Movement, which was led by Sayer. This was ultimately his undoing. Sayer performed dangerous experiments on him in order to test his abilities. The end result? He was fatally electrocuted.

    Graham Specter - 'Baccano!'

Graham Specter has a personality that is, to put it lightly, extreme. His passion is for taking apart tangible objects - including human beings, though he prefers not to end their lives. He even does this to himself, dislocating every joint and bone in his body in order to fully understand the ramifications of doing this to others.

While Graham is certainly obsessed with taking things apart, there's a person who receives his more fannish energy - and that's serial killer Ladd Russo. He is so devoted to Russo that he happily gives him credit for his own accomplishments, and anyone who insults Russo will have to face his wrath.

Teresa Wagner - 'Tada Never Falls In Love'

Teresa Wagner - 'Tada Never Falls In Love'

Teresa Wagner is a foreign exchange student from Luxembourg who is Japan for a couple of reasons, but one of them is to indulge in her obsession - a Japanese historical drama called Rainbow Shogun. She doesn't realize that it's no longer popular and expects everyone she meets in Japan to be familiar with it. When she does meet a fellow fan, she's utterly delighted.

This is actually one of the things that the titular Tada likes about her - her unrestrained enthusiasm for the thing she's obsessed with.
