Philosopher's Grandson, also known as Kenja no Mago or Wiseman's Grandchild, is one of the latest additions to the isekai genre. A bored and exhausted young office employee is struck by a car and passes away, but is reincarnated into a magical world. Though he retains the memories of his former life, he grows up as Shin Wolford, a young boy being raised by a mage named Merlin. Though Shin possesses unrivaled magical potential, he has a problem - Merlin never taught him any basic life skills. With so much power and so little common sense, how will he manage?

Are there other anime like Philosopher's Grandson? Of course! Anime like KonoSuba, Re:ZERO, and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime all follow the same basic premise - a person loses their life, but is reincarnated into a magical world where they possess powers they never could have dreamed of. There are also shows like No Game No Life where the characters don't reincarnate, they just travel - but the overall feel of the shows is similar.

  • That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

If you're looking for another anime about an ordinary person who is reincarnated into a fantasy world, The Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is a particularly enjoyable example of the trope. After middle-aged salaryman Satoru Mikami is stabbed on the street, he's reincarnated into a fantasy world - but not as a human. Instead, he's reincarnated into an exceptionally powerful slime. Though he remembers his old life, he quickly acclimates to his new one and starts gathering friends and allies, all of which he'll need to take on powerful enemies like the orc lord.

  • In Another World with My Smartphone is another isekai anime in which the protagonist passes away and is reincarnated into a fantasy world. In this case, the protagonist is a teenager who God accidentally hit with a lightning bolt. To make up for his mistake, God agrees to give him a new life, one where he possesses exceptional magical powers that are beyond what most people in his world possess. What's more, he gets to keep his cell phone, a form of technology that no one else in his world has access to.

  • Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu

It's rare to find an isekai where the protagonist is reincarnated into a baby - Philosopher's Grandson is one of the few. If you're looking for another example of this unique approach to the genre, you should keep your eyes peeled for Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu, an anime slated to come out at an unspecified time in the future. A 34-year-old NEET is reincarnated into a baby named Rudeus Greyrat, a denizen of a magical world. Now endowed with both the memories of his past life and prodigious levels of supernatural powers, he decides to use this life to make up for the mistakes he made in his old one. Most of these mistakes seem to revolve around not having the courage to put the moves on attractive girls.

The boy is part of a family of impoverished nobles, and as he gets older, it becomes his responsibility to manage the land. Although he has few skills in that department, he does have magic. Will he be able to solve the problems of his new life, or will he be buried under them?

    No Game No Life

Shin Wolford's first life is a pretty lackluster one. He worked a job that brought him no pleasure and didn't have anything resembling a social life. When he's reincarnated into a new world, his aptitude for magic exceeds anything that he ever experienced in the real world, and he's able to flourish. The same thing happens to Sora and Shiro, two shut-in gamers who win every competition they enter but have no real-world accomplishments or relationships to speak of. When they get transported to Disboard, they're able to put their gaming skills to good use - in fact, they use them to become leaders of the world.

Re:Zero is one of the most popular anime in the isekai genre, which means that it's a must-watch for fans of The Philosopher's Grandson. Natsuki Subaru is an otaku who is unexpectedly transported to a new world after losing his life in an accident. Things aren't any safer in the new world, however - as soon as he gets there, he's jumped by a group of thugs. Satella, a girl searching for a lost insignia, rescues him just before he's about to be annihilated.. The two journey together to find the insignia, but just when they succeed, they're attacked by something far more powerful and sinister. It seems like things are all over for Subaru, but his life is "reset" to when he first arrived.

  • Ichirou Suzuki is a computer programmer in his late twenties who is totally burned out and exhausted. After he gets through a particularly grueling stretch of work, he goes to sleep and wakes up in a world that combines the games he's been working on into one bizarre RPG. Not only that, but he's a younger version of himself with a new name, Satou. After an encounter with an army of marauding lizardmen, his stats are maxed out and his powers are seemingly infinite. Just like Shin Wolford, Satou is starting his new life as one of the most powerful beings around.

    Radiant

Radiant follows Seth, a sorcerer-in-training who is one of the few people who are "Infected" - meaning, they survived contact with a dangerous creature called Nemesis. He's also a sorcerer-in-training who has made it his mission to defend humanity from Nemesis attacks. Not only does he intend to defeat the Nemesis who appear, he also wants to find Radiant, their legendary cradle, to stop them once and for all.

While Seth is sure of his goals and Shin is not, the two of them are both enthusiastic protagonists ready to take on whatever life throws at them. Both series open with them as children and both of them have important relationships with their magical mentors. Besides the main characters, both shows have the same fun and splashy vibe.

  • Saga of Tanya the Evil

Saga of Tanya the Evil is yet another isekai about a protagonist who is reborn into a new world not as themselves, but as a completely different person. In Tanya Degurechaff's case, she was once a disgruntled salaryman who didn't believe in any gods or deities. Being X, an entitty that claimed to be god transported him to a violent magical world as a vulnerable little girl in the hopes that desperation would ignite her belief. Rather than languishing in misery, however, Tanya rises to the upper echelons of society and becomes a powerful military leader.

  • Knight's & Magic

If you're a fan of Philosopher's Grandson who also loves mecha anime, you might want to check out Knight's & Magic. This anime follows a nerdy mecha lover who is reincarnated into a world dominated by gigantic robots called the Silhouette Knights. The protagonist, now named Ernesti Echevarria or Eru, wants to build his own mecha and become its pilot. This won't be an easy task, but hey, it can't be harder than reincarnating into a brand new fantasy world in the first place.

  • Ascendance of a Bookworm

With so many new isekai coming out, it's hard to know which ones to focus on. Ascendance of a Bookworm looks poised to be something truly special. It shares many common elements with The Philosopher's Grandson, including a protagonist who passes away unexpectedly and is reincarnated into a world different from their own. But Ascendance of a Bookworm also adds something new to the genre - a female protagonist. In a male-centered genre, Motosu Urano seems like she'll be a breath of fresh air. But what makes her unique isn't just her gender - she's also a student on the verge of starting her librarian career, rather than the standard shut-in gamer or burned out salaryman that appear in so many isekai. Her new world is one with almost no books in it, so in order to achieve her goals, she'll have to create books herself.

The release date for Ascendance of a Bookworm has yet to be announced, so interested anime fans will have to wait.

    Aho Girl

    Aho Girl

Aho Girl isn't an isekai like Philosopher's Grandson, but it does have one key thing in common - neither of the protagonists have any common sense whatsoever! In Shin's case. it's because he spent all of his time learning magic instead of basic life skills. For Yoshiko Hanabatake, the protagonist of Aho Girl, it's more of an inborn thing. If you love the idea of a protagonist who has no idea what's going on and makes all manner of bone-headed decisions, you'll probably get a kick out of Aho Girl.
