Vote up your favorite nun characters in anime.

In real life, nuns are devout followers of the Christian faith who help to keep religious institutions going. While that's not totally untrue in anime, nuns tend to have a little more going on. Perhaps they have magical powers, as with Hibana and Iris from Fire Force.

Maybe they're secretly drug dealers or CIA agents, like Yolanda and Eda from Black Lagoon. Maybe they exorcise demons like Rosette Christopher from Chrono Crusade. While many of them do wear traditional nun garb, their clothing is often far more stylized or revealing.

Though not especially realistic, these nuns sure are intriguing. Which one is your favorite?

  • Sister Lily Aquaria - 'Black Clover'
    1

Sister Lily Aquaria - 'Black Clover'

    101 votes

Sister Lily Aquaria was born into a noble family, but she wasn't happy with her life there. Why? Because of the rampant discrimination that existed amongst the various classes. Hoping to create a more just society, she leaves her noble family and becomes a nun.

It turns out that the church is also pretty corrupt, so she ends up taking a less prestigious but more fulfilling post at the orphanage where Asta grew up. Considering how principled and nice she is, it's kind of no wonder that Asta wants to marry her.

  • Iris - 'Fire Force'
    2

    Iris - 'Fire Force'

    66 votes

After escaping from the fire that destroyed nearly everyone at the Holy Sol Temple, Iris eventually followed Hibana into the Special Fire Force Company, serving under Company 8.

As a trained nun, one of her biggest roles involves praying for the souls of the Infernals that they have to destroy so that they can pass on in peace. What she doesn't know is that she's also the Eighth Pillar and the Doppelgänger of Amaterasu.

  • Sharon Holygrail - 'Engage Kiss'
    3

    Sharon Holygrail - 'Engage Kiss'

    53 votes

As a member of the Seiten Church, Sharon Holygrail appears to be a kind, benevolent person who spends most of her time engaging in charity work. The reality is a bit different. Seiten Church is actually an undercover exorcist group, and Sharon is one of its most ruthless members.

She's on the hunt for Asmodeus, the child of a fellow exorcist and a demon who has been hiding out in human society.

  • Kasugaya Shizuri Castiella - 'Strike the Blood'
    4

Kasugaya Shizuri Castiella - 'Strike the Blood'

    32 votes

Though dressed like a nun, Kasugaya Shizuri Castiella is a paladiness of Gisella. She trained with Kojo Akatsuki on Onrai Island for about six months, working as his observer. During that time, she became infatuated with him.

She's part ogre and part Blood Servant - a sort of pseudo-vampire specific to Strike the Blood.

  • Index is a teenage girl who not only has a flawless memory, she is also capable of reading and memorizing grimoires without suffering any negative physical effects. At the start of the series, she has memorized 103,000 magical grimoires. While this is an amazing ability, it's one that gets her taken advantage of by the Anglican Church. She spends much of her life being forcibly taken to a variety of grimoires in order to memorize them - sometimes literally in chains.

Though she lacks the ability to use the spells she memorizes, she does have an impressive defensive item called the Walking Church, which takes the form of a typical nun's habit.

  • Hibana - 'Fire Force'
    6

    Hibana - 'Fire Force'

    48 votes

Hibana was raised at the Holy Sol Temple, a sun-worshipping religious group. Because she was the only person there with pyrokinetic abilities, the rest of her community treated her like she was special. Her feelings about her powers were positive, but they changed dramatically after Spontaneous Human Combustion hit the temple. Aside from Hibana and Iris, there were no survivors. This made her hate her powers, but also made her want to enhance them so that she could figure out what was going on and get revenge.

Currently, she serves as the captain of the Special Fire Force Company 5.

  • Sister Yolanda - 'Black Lagoon'
    7

    Sister Yolanda - 'Black Lagoon'

    96 votes

Sister Yolanda is the leader of the Rip-off Church, a church that's used as a front for weapon sales, drug sales, and other illicit doings. Yolanda is a stern leader who leaves most of the fighting to her two subordinates, Eda and Rico. That said, she is fully capable of tearing up a room with her customized Golden Desert Eagle pistol.

She does have one trait that isn't terrifying, and that's a love for tea.

  • Eda - 'Black Lagoon'
    8

    Eda - 'Black Lagoon'

    72 votes

Eda is Sister Yolanda's subordinate in the Rip-Off Church. While she participates in the Church's illicit activities and spends time drinking with Revy and other Lagoon members, her true allegiance lies elsewhere.

She actually works for the CIA and is trying to gather enough information to take the Rip-Off Church and other similar organizations down. Sister Yolanda is fully aware of this, but she doesn't care as long as she's compensated for whatever information Eda picks up.

  • Maria Takayama - 'Haganai: I Don't Have Many Friends'
    9

Maria Takayama - 'Haganai: I Don't Have Many Friends'

    41 votes

Despite being only ten years old, Maria Takayama claims to be an adult, a teacher, and a nun. In reality, she's a child prodigy who skipped several grades and attends high school with the main cast. Despite being well-educated and intelligent, she still acts her age. In fact, she's unusually gullible and naive, even for a 10-year-old.

This might be because she skipped multiple grades and lacks social experiences that most kids her age have. She has trouble making friends with high school students, which is why she's in the Neighbors' Club.

She also has no training or background as a nun, but she's pretty good at making up bible verses.

  • Yumiko Takagi - 'Hellsing'
    10

    Yumiko Takagi - 'Hellsing'

    30 votes

Yumiko Takagi is a member of Iscariot (Vatican Section XIII), an arm of the Roman Catholic Church that officially doesn't exist, but which is dedicated to destroying all things unholy - most notably, vampires. She has a split personality - Yumiko is gentle, shy, and non-violent, while Yumie is a dangerous assassin who revels in causing pain.

  • Rosette Christopher is an elite Exorcist who serves under the Order of Magdalene's New York Branch. She has exorcised countless demons and is an asset to the group. However, her real motivation is quite personal. She wants to find her brother, who was taken away by a demon four years ago. In order to accomplish this, she forms a contract with a demon named Chrono.

The problem is that whenever she calls on Chrono's powers, her life is shortened, so she doesn't expect to live past 30.

  • Mathilda Simmons - 'Black Butler'
    12

    Mathilda Simmons - 'Black Butler'

    19 votes

Mathilda Simmons is a nun who serves a cult that's squatting in an abandoned Catholic monastery. She strongly believes that everything and everyone must be pure. After Ash Landers claims that the cult possesses the Doomsday Book, Sebastian tries to seduce her, thereby making her “impure” so that he can get more information about the book.

Later, when Angela Blanc is “cleansing” the cult members, the Undertaker rewrites her Cinematic Record to alter the events in her life. This is used to transport Sebastian, Grelle Sutcliffe and William T. Spears to the monastery.

  • Sister - 'Arakawa Under The Bridge'
    13

Sister - 'Arakawa Under The Bridge'

    17 votes

Sister is a 29-year-old British woman who used to be a member of the military. These days, she holds mass for the people who live under the bridge. These masses are often very short and tend to revolve around her firing weapons and running military drills. She doesn't seem to have a great grasp of what the bible actually says, and she pictures God as Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid.

Like everybody else under the bridge, she's a strange and contradictory person. Despite and perhaps because of that, she's an important part of her community.

  • Sarah Adiemus - 'School Rumble'
    14

    Sarah Adiemus - 'School Rumble'

    17 votes

Hailing from an orphanage in England, Sarah Adiemus is one of Yakumo Tsukamoto's closest friends. Her main role in the story involves supporting Yakumo, but when she isn't with her friend, she's working at one of her many part-time jobs.

One of those jobs involves working as a nun at a local church. There, she plays the organ, babysits kids, takes wedding photos, and even performs exorcisms.

  • Mother Carmel - 'One Piece'
    15

    Mother Carmel - 'One Piece'

    23 votes

Nuns aren't always good people, and Mother Carmel is a prime example of that fact. Though she appears to be a kind and benevolent person who runs an orphanage called Sheep's House, the orphanage is actually a front for her real job as a child trafficker. But her business was totally legal - she sold kids to the World Government to be trained as Marines or Cipher Pol agents.

We're not going to say she deserved to be devoured by her charge Charlotte Linlin, but she didn't not deserve it either.
