An entire generation grew up with the Midnight Society from Are You Afraid of the Dark? Two incarnations of the beloved Canadian-American television show actually existed and played on Nickelodeon in the US. The first version lasted from 1992 to 1996; the second from 1999 to 2000. Overall, a total of seven seasons and 91 episodes aired on the network.

The premise of Are You Afraid of the Dark? is simple enough. A group of teens assemble at night in the woods and take turns telling scary stories. In between, the tales get reenacted, usually by another group of teens. And each character has a specific storytelling style and personality.

The kids on the show affected a lot of viewers' lives, and if you ever wondered where the Midnight Society cast members are today, you're likely not alone. A few of the actors still work in the business; others chose entirely different career paths. And a couple seemingly dropped off the radar completely.

  • Her role of Megan on AYAOTD marked her first television gig, but Elisha Cuthbert eventually acquired fame on both the big and small screen. She played Kim Bauer on 24, Alex Kerkovich on Happy Endings, and Abby on The Ranch. Her feature film credits include Love Actually, The Girl Next Door, and Just Before I Go.

Cuthbert is married to professional hockey player Dion Phaneuf. They have two children.

  • Ross Hull portrayed Gary, and he's continued with occasional acting gigs since the first version of AYAOTD went off the air. After graduating from Mississippi State University and Ryerson University, Hull became a meteorologist in his native Canada. Hull embraces his child-star roots and his most famous role. He shared:

I think the concept of the Midnight Society was a really fascinating one... So, to be a part of that (even if I wasn't really a kid... I was in my late teens when we shot the series) was something special.

  • After her role as Kiki on AYAOTD, Jodi Resther voiced the character Francine on Arthur from 1996 to 2022. She continues to do live-action work, and notably appeared in Todd Hayne's innovative Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There and in the Eli Roth remake of Death Wish.

Resther is also an R&B singer with two albums to her credit.

  • Jason Alisharan Is A Producer

Jason Alisharan, who played Frank on AYAOTD, mostly stayed away from the limelight after the show went off the air. Now, he tends to work exclusively behind the scenes. In 2010, he explained:

I haven’t been an actor for some time. I spent three years in the live action division at DreamWorks here in LA and worked on such films as Transformers, Collateral, Red Eye, Win a Date with Tad Hamilton, and She’s the Man

He also co-produced the Tom Ford film A Single Man in 2009.

  • Raine Pare-Coull No Longer Acts

Raine Pare-Coull played Betty Ann, and she is one of those child stars who left the spotlight. Pare-Coull has just two post-AYAOTD credits. One from 1996, and the other from 2006. Both were for guest roles on Canadian television shows. She seems to have a Twitter account, but rarely posts on it.

According to her IMDb page, she also provided additional voices for the US version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

  • JoAnna Garcia Swisher Appears In TV Shows And Films

JoAnna Garcia Swisher played Sam on the Nickelodeon show and is still a busy working actor. Among her many credits, she portrayed Vicki on Freaks and Geeks, Cheyenne on Reba, Megan on Privileged, and Sally on The Mindy Project. She's also in movies, including American Pie 2 and Not Another Teen Movie.

The actor is married to former professional baseball player Nick Swisher, and the couple has two daughters.

  • Nathaniel Moreau Has A Private Life

After leaving his AYAOTD role of David in 1993, Nathaniel Moreau had several parts, including playing young Peter Caine on Kung Fu: The Legend Continues for a few years. After that, Moreau went silent. He has no additional acting credits, and he seemingly retreated from the spotlight for a private life.

  • Rachel Blanchard parlayed her childhood role of Kristen on AYAOTD into a successful adult career and has participated in numerous high-profile projects. Blanchard starred as Cher Horowitz in the TV series Clueless and appeared on Fargo, Flight of the Conchords, and You Me Her, to name just a few of her credits.

The actor also does films, like Sugar & Spice and Snakes on a Plane. She is married with a young daughter.

  • Though he was only AYAOTD's Eric for one season, Jacob Tierney works steadily in both television and film. He is also a director and screenwriter for movies like Twist, The Trotsky, and Good Neighbors. He directs and writes for television, as well, most notably for the comedy series Letterkenny - on which he also acts.

"I've never had another job," Tierney said in 2015. "I've never done anything but work in film, TV, theater... It's something I love, and I feel very grateful and privileged that I've gotten to do it my whole life."

  • Vanessa Lengies has maintained a consistent acting career since playing Vange on AYAOTD. She was a regular on Glee and American Dreams, and guest-starred on a number of shows, like Medium and Castle.

Lengies also hosted the documentary series The S Word with Vanessa Lengies, in which she explores her sexuality and gender on a filmed odyssey of experimentation and self-discovery.

  • After the first generation of AYAOTD and his role as Tucker came to an end, Daniel DeSanto kept acting, mostly doing voiceover work and taking guest-starring roles on television. In one of his few film credits, DeSanto played Gretchen Wieners's boyfriend, Jason, in Mean Girls (the guy who asks Cady if her muffin is buttered). From 2016 to 2018, he voiced Daring Danny X on PAW Patrol.

  • Codie Lucas Wilbee Doesn't Act Anymore

Codie Lucas Wilbee played Stig in AYAOTD, and that's his last acting credit as of 2018. He apparently stepped back from the public eye after that.

  • Kareem Blackwell Is A Firefighter

After playing Quinn, Kareem Blackwell had just one acting gig in 2002, before seemingly retiring from the biz. According to his Facebook page, he is a firefighter in Yonkers, NY.

  • In a mystery worthy of the Midnight Society, David Deveau virtually disappeared from public life after AYAOTD, on which he played Andy.
