Vote up the characters you never realized don't quite measure up.

While watching anime, you might have some guesses about anime character heights. Often, those guesses are on point, but sometimes your guesses are a little - or a lot - off base. There are some seriously surprising anime character heights out there. For example, did you know that Brook from One Piece is over nine feet tall? What about the frightening fact that Dragonite from Pokémon is half the height of Dragonair, who it evolves from? Yeah, it gets weird.

This list only includes characters with official canon heights. So, despite how distressingly tall as the characters from xxxHolic appear to be, they aren't on the list, because without knowing for sure if CLAMP intended for Watanuki to be nine feet tall, it's impossible to know if it's truly surprising.

If a character's height came out of nowhere, vote it up. Vote down those character heights that you totally already saw coming.

Milly Thompson Looks Like She Towers Over People, But She's Only 5'6"

Milly Thompson Looks Like She Towers Over People, But She's Only 5'6"

One thing that Trigun fans often remember about the show is how outlandishly huge Milly Thompson seemed to be. She hulks above her coworker Meryl Stryfe, and her head practically scrapes the top of doorways. You'd expect her to be at least six feet tall if not taller, but Milly is actually just 5'6".

Milly is from a fictional planet called Gunsmoke, so it's hard to make comparisons to real-world women, but no matter what, 5'6" just isn't outlandishly tall for an adult human.

Toshinori Yagi Is Tall AND Ripped

All Might, also known as Toshinori Yagi, is probably the largest character in My Hero Academia aside from Mt. Lady, but a lot of fans don't realize quite how tall he is. The professional hero-turned-teacher stands at an impressive seven-foot, two inches.

This is terrifying, but it isn't obvious - when he's in his massive, muscular form, you're paying more attention to his impressive physique, and when he loses that form, he's so hunched over that his full height isn't obvious.

  • It's obvious that Piccolo from the Dragon Ball Universe is tall, but exactly how tall might come as a surprise. Since he's a Namekian amongst humans, Saiyans, and Androids, it's sort of hard to gauge how tall he should be or actually is. That said, most viewers estimated Piccolo to be maybe 6'6" tall. Those estimates are dramatically wrong.

The dude is 7' 5", roughly a foot taller than anyone might have reasonably assumed. Keep in mind that Vegeta is 5'3" - Piccolo's taller than him, but he's not the same height as Vegeta with Baby Trunks standing on his shoulders.

  • The proportions of One Piece characters are utterly incomprehensible no matter what, but Brook's height is exceptionally baffling. Brook, a living skeleton, is a startling 9'1½" tall. This is taller than any humanoid creature has any right to be. It's also way taller than he actually appears to be on screen.

Sanji, for example, is a reasonable 5'10" - but Brook, who is supposedly almost twice his height, looks like he's maybe six inches taller at most. Basically, One Piece is straight up lying.

Yami Yugi And Yugi Mutou Are The Exact Same Height

One of the most surprising things about Yu-Gi-Oh!'s Yami Yugi is that he is, in fact, the same height as his host body, Yugi Mutou. Logically, of course he would be. The kid's bones aren't going to stretch every time he lets his alternate personality take over.

That said, the anime consistently depicts Yami Yugi as at least a head taller than he actually is.

Risa Koizumi Shouldn't Be As Worried About Her 5'7" Stature As She Is

Risa Koizumi of Lovely Complex has an, ahem, complex about her height. She's exceptionally tall for a Japanese girl, and her male love interest, Atsushi Otani, is exceptionally short. However, her exact height might come as a surprise to Western viewers who aren't hip to what qualifies as tall in Japan.

Despite the big to-do being made about Risa's height, she's only 5'7". Sure, that's tall, but it might not seem that significant unless you know that the average Japanese woman is only 5'2".

    Nicolas Brown Is Deceptively Short

    Nicolas Brown Is Deceptively Short

Nicolas Brown, the protagonist of Gangsta, is about 5'5". Not only is this fairly unusual for a 34-year-old man, it's also just not apparent from the anime itself. In the above image, Nicolas (the dude covered in blood towering over everyone else) actually looks taller than Worick, who is almost six feet tall.

The characters are often walking with significant distance between each other, which confuses viewer's perspective. Also, they spend a lot of time flipping around in the air. For those reasons, it's pretty easy to watch all of Gangsta without ever noticing that Nicolas is on the short side.

  • In no universe is Orihime Inoue from Bleach 5'2". Yes, there are some shots where she looks like she could be on the short side, but in others, like the one above, she looks like she's almost the same height as Ichigo, who is 5'9". Since she's hunched over, she could even be taller than him. They're standing right next to each other, so it's not a matter of perspective - she just looks way, way taller than 5'2".

Bleach isn't even remotely consistent with its character's heights, so if Orihime's true height is a surprise to you, you're not alone.

Otabek Altin Is Small, But You Can't Tell When He's Skating

Otabek Altin Is Small, But You Can't Tell When He's Skating

Yuri!!! on Ice features Otabek Altin, a short-for-his-age professional skater from Kazakhstan. At 5'6", he's not outlandishly short, but he is on the lower end of the spectrum for a 19-year-old guy. It is difficult for viewers to really gauge his height due to the scenes we usually see him in. He's usually seen sitting down or leaping around a skating rink, so you never really get to make a decent assessment.

Also, the dude wears a leather jacket and rides a motorcycle, two habits that tend men look taller than they actually are.

  • Dragonite Is Disappointingly Small For A Dragon

Your average Dragonite is about 7'3", which is on the small side for a dragon Pokémon, but whatever. What's wild about Dragonite's height is how small it is in comparison to Dragonair, the Pokémon it evolved from. Dragonair is 13′1", almost twice Dragonite's height. So you have to wonder, where the heck did all the extra length go?

Dragonite is wider than Dragonair, but not that much wider. Mass doesn't simply disappear. Dragonite might be cute, but it's actually kind of an abomination.

  • Nagisa Hazuki of Free! Iwatobi Swim Club is shorter than all of his friends, who range from around 5'8'' to over six feet tall. Because Nagisa looks so much smaller, it's easy to assume that he's something like 5'2" or 5'3" - but actually, Nagisa is 5'5", a totally normal height for a Japanese 16-year-old.

He's not as tiny as he seems - he's just surrounded by hulking oceanic beasts in high school school uniforms.

Yusuke Makishima And Jinpachi Toudou Are Rivals That Are Almost Neck And Neck

One of the cool things about Yowamushi Pedal is that it pays extra attention to designing unique physiques for its characters. For that reason, it can be easy to get confused about character heights. Yusuke Makishima definitely looks a lot taller than his rival, Jinpachi Toudou - but surprisingly, they're roughly the same height.

Makishima is 5'9" while Toudou is 5'8 ½". The difference is that Makishima is a long dangly noodle boy who looks about six inches taller than he actually is, while Toudou is more compact, and actually looks a little shorter than he really is.

  • Kyosuke Higuchi Has A Bit Of A Napoleon Complex

Kyosuke Higuchi, aka the dude with the really huge teeth from Death Noteis actually only 5'5". This is two and a half inches shorter than the average Japanese man, so it's not so weird if you're keeping that in mind - but lets face it, a lot of Western fans aren't.

That said, most viewers probably didn't expect the outlandishly evil Higuchi to be shorter than average - for some reason, people tend to associate height with power, and Higuchi sure thought he had a lot of it. Maybe he has a Napoleon complex?

The Armored Titan Is 15 Meters Tall, But It Still Seems Small

The Armored Titan Is 15 Meters Tall, But It Still Seems Small

What's surprising about the Armored Titan isn't that he's enormous - it's Attack on Titan, so that comes with the territory. What's shocking about the Armored Titan is how freakin' small he is in comparison to the Colossal Titan. Yes, the Colossal Titan is supposed to be significantly bigger than all the others, but the difference is out of this world.

The Colossal Titan is 60 meters, or approximately 197 feet tall, while the Armored Titan is 1/4th that size at 15 meters. By comparison, the Armored Titan seems almost small.
