Boyz N the Hood Reviews

Aug 25, 2024

Perhaps the first example of a film being overrated because of the addressing of social issues. The plot is not great, the cinematography is nothing to talk about, the characters are stereotypical exaggerations. The convincing acting is the real strong spot, just look at how many it convinced that this was a masterpiece. There was a time that I felt it was better than this review suggests but in looking at where things have gone in America and entertainment, I blame this and... the 2 Live Crew. It's not really an exaggeration either as my 1/2 star rating means I HATE IT FOR EXISTING. And now, in 2024 after viewing it and reviewing it - I HATE IT FOR EXISTING.

Classic. One of the OG gangsta movies from the 90's.

Awesome story and performances by all, besides Cuba who doesn't get there at all for me. Mostly appreciative of Fishburne being the coolest pwrson alive in every scene hes in.

I remember Boyz n the Hood making a pretty big impact when it came out in 1991, but I didn't see this movie until now. It definitely made an impression on me. This film does not reflect my childhood, but there were elements I was able to relate to, especially as a parent. Laurence Fishburne gives a stand-out performance as a father who is just trying his best to raise his son right. Even though, cinematically, it has a few bumpy moments as the director, John Singleton, tries to find his footing during his feature film debut, Boyz n the Hood is an impactful movie. And it's FAR better than Friday (1995).

First time watching this movie and have to say very let down, was expecting much more given all the critical acclaim this movie has received. 30 years ago I can imagine this movie was hard-hitting and definitely telling a much needed story of current events at that time. But watching it today the quality of filmmaking has came on leaps and bounds and makes this movie seem amateurish. Good performances from a young cast of future stars but overall the movie hasn't aged well in my opinion. Still worth a watch if you've never seen it.

A perfect way of showing the viewer the complications and struggles of growing up in an LA American hood in the 90s, story, script and cast were all incredibly solid, in general a great movie

One of my favorite childhood movies.

While benefiting from a clever screenplay, Boyz N the Hood is a shockingly deep movie with interesting characters and profound emotional beats.

Life on the streets is not as glamorous as it appears, especially in the Hood! Tre lives with his father and hangs out with the brothers Doughboy and Ricky, constantly trying to stay above the decay of his environment while his two friends are unfortunately dragged into it. Emotionally raw and deeply tragic, the cold reality of inner-city life is shown in unflinching heartbreak!

Classic urban hip-hop life. The original just can't be beat. A must see, if, like me, you have just not gotten around to seeing it.

Such a good movie this is a must watch.

Such a good and cruel movie about a world, in which so many young people have to grow up in.

Lost some of it's power over the years but Boyz N The Hood still hits hard in its tale of life growing up around crime & death in LA's Crenshaw district.

Not sure if I understand the immense praise this movie has received, but it is good nonetheless. Acting is, for the most part, great. Even greater are the characters. The movie is strange in that it feels incredibly simple and subtly complex at the same time. It presents its plot with the accessibility of a children's novel, yet the subject matter is very mature and the topics discussed aren't black and white. They raise real questions that are more prevalent than ever right now. It also does a nice job at blending humor into the drama that unfolds. Overall it's a movie that's made with a lot of heart, and with that comes a bit of cheese. I'm glad I finally gave it a watch.
