Sausage Party: Foodtopia: Season 1 Reviews

I realize how dumb this looks spelled out, but this is a foundational problem with Foodtopia: It forces the viewer to think through the implications of a world in which food has consciousness.

It eventually begins expanding this world in an interesting way, mimicking hilarious elements of our society, but these attempts are unable to overcome the inconsistency within the humor.

Not as full a meal as the original film, but almost as funny -- and much filthier. If nothing else, it will put you off your food.

An eight-episode series ... that simply regurgitates the same tired material as the film, while adding little to the recipe.

The series wobbles along the fine line between stupid and clever, falling — not by accident — to one side and then the other.

Full Review | Jul 12, 2024

It’s not new (obviously). It’s not clever (or at least not clever enough). But worst of all, it’s not fun.

Sausage Party’s sequel isn’t bland, but it leaves much to be desired in its wake.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's animated hit from 2016 quickly tires out in series form, with the Prime Video show upping the raunch factor a bit too much.

It’s like Sausage Party: Foodtopia ate a better, smarter series, and then regurgitated it in puddles between bouts of tedious excess.

Full Review | Original Score: 2/5 | Jul 12, 2024

This isn’t something that’s so bad it’s good. It’s good because it’s so bad, and you have no choice but to hop on its particular wavelength of smart stupidity. But once you’re on, it’s a pretty hilarious ride.

What is interesting about Sausage Party: Utopia is how it explores the pitfalls and perils of setting up a new society.

Full Review | Jul 12, 2024

While it’s not strictly boring and the low-budget animation seems to capture the same spirit as the film, nothing in Foodtopia is worth getting hungry over.

Sausage Party: Foodtopia is unnecessarily dark for a cartoon about talking food, know what we mean?

Full Review | Jul 11, 2024

If the film felt like the work of unruly, creative 13-year-old boys, the show has grown up: it bears the hallmarks of unruly, creative 15-year-old boys.

Fr those of us who love this stuff (and I am here for any anthropomorphised pets, toys or food you wanna build a story round), it’s a glorious addition to the genre.

Foodtopia may have had more time and Amazon’s backing, but the show still looks like an unfinished computer rendering, with a blocky simplicity that extends outside of Shopwell’s and into the wider world.

Full Review | Jul 11, 2024

More than anything, it’s the series’ oh-they-didn’t-just-go-there naughtiness, terrific vocal cast and ridiculous situations that make you laugh uncontrollably.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/4 | Jul 10, 2024

Sausage Party: Foodtopia manages to once more capture the silly-meets-scandalous approach of the movie, proving there’s still many laughs to be had for those who were amused by cutesy, cursing, libidinous food the first time around.

Full Review | Original Score: 8/10 | Jul 10, 2024

In making the lurch to television, the Sausage Party: Foodtopia creative team has failed to find any real narrative or character-based explanation for what feels like a plate of reheated leftovers rather than a carefully devised gastronomic experience.

… while the series lacks the unanticipated heart of the film, it will no doubt delight the fans who signed on for the crude, rude, and cartoonishly gross cheekiness of it all.
