Tempter = Rupert
• A truce هدنةbetween Rassendyll and Michael to hide their hatred
from the public:
- Both Michael and Rassendyll were play-actors; hating each other, they
combined to deceive public opinion. They had to conceal (hide) their
hatred. However, the necessity for concealment involved the necessity
of delay: the King might die in his prison.
- Because of the truce and secrecy, Zenda became in the day-time a sort of
neutral zone, where both parties could safely go.
• The Prefect of the Strelsau Police enquires about a missing British
man (Rudolf Rassendyll):
- Riding down one day with Flavia and Sapt, Rassendyll met the Head
(Prefect) of the Strelsau Police.
- The Prefect told the King (Rassendyll) that he was in Zenda because the
British Ambassador asked him to search for a British man (Rassendyll)
who was missing. His friends had not heard from him for two months,
and it was believed that he was last seen in Zenda."
- Rassendyll asked the prefect why they thought the British man was last
seen in Zenda.
- The prefect replied that a friend of his, called George Featherly, had
given them information which made it possible that he had gone there,
and the officials of the railway recollected (remembered) his name on
some luggage.
- Rassendyll asked the prefect about the man’s name, and the prefect
replied it was Rassendyll. Rassendyll noticed that the name meant
nothing to the prefect.

- The prefect told Rassendyll that it was thought he might have followed a
lady there, called Madame de Mauban. He added that she arrived in
Ruritania about the same time as this Rassendyll.
- Rassendyll asked Sapt and Flavia to leave him alone with the prefect
because he wanted to tell him something.
- The prefect then told the King (Rassendyll) that the man might have
been in love with Antoinette de Mauban. Then looking towards the
Castle of Zenda, he added that nothing had been heard of him for two
months.
- The King (Rassendyll) told him that the lady was really there (in the
Castle), but he didn’t think that Mr. Rassendyll was there.
- The prefect told the King (Rassendyll) that the duke didn’t like rivals,
implying that the duke might have kidnapped or killed the British man.
- Rassendyll told the prefect that he made a grave (serious and
dangerous) charge. Then he asked him to go back to Strelsau and quiet
the British ambassador and tell him they needed a week or two.
- Rassendyll told the prefect that if your suspicions were correct, it was
an affair in which we must move with caution. We could have no
scandal.
- Rassendyll thought the clever official (prefect) had come surprisingly
near the truth. His impression might be useful someday, but if he acted
on it now it might mean the worse to the King. So, enquiries after
Rassendyll must be stopped for a week or two.
• Meeting Rupert:
- Then they saw a funeral. When the procession (funeral) approached
them, they saw Rupert, who asked the procession to stop.
- Rupert came and told the King (Rassendyll) that it was the funeral of his
friend Lauengram.
- Rupert was looking at Flavia with admiration, and Rassendyll was very
jealous, but he could do nothing.
- Rupert told Rassendyll that he was sad for his friend and added that
others must lie (die) as he lied now.
- Then Rassendyll asked about his brother (Michael), and Rupert told him
that he was better and he (Michael) hoped to leave for Strelsau soon,
when his health was secured.

- When Rupert left them, Rassendyll followed him and talked to him
privately.
- Rassendyll told Rupert that if he delivered their prisoner (King) alive to
him, he (Rassendyll) would not hurt him (Rupert).
