Iran's Acting FM Heads to New York for UNSC Meetings on Multilateralism, Palestine

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Caretaker Foreign Minister Ali Baqeri departed for New York on Monday morning, leading a delegation to participate in United Nations Security Council sessions.

The sessions will focus on Palestine and multilateralism.

Both meetings will be chaired by the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who currently holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council.

On Sunday, the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) reported "horrific scenes" at a hospital in the southern Gaza Strip following a deadly Israeli strike on a "humanitarian zone" for displaced Palestinians.

At least 90 people were killed and nearly 300 others injured in the Al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip on Saturday.

The Israeli army claimed that the attack was aimed at Mohamed Deif, the commander of Hamas' armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, and his deputy.

Despite a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire, Israel continues its genocidal offensive on Gaza, drawing international condemnation.

Local health authorities report nearly 38,600 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed and nearly 88,900 injured in Israeli attacks that began on October 7, 2023.

Over nine months into the Israeli onslaught, large parts of Gaza are in ruins amidst a crippling blockade of food, clean water, and medicine.

Israel faces accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice, which recently ordered an immediate halt to its military operation in the southern city of Rafah.

More than one million Palestinians had sought refuge in Rafah before it was invaded on May 6.
