Apply for a New Sanitarian Registration

Education Requirements

You must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university including at least 30 semester hours in a basic or applied science.

An official transcript from an accredited college or university that meets or exceeds the education requirements must be included with your application materials.

For a comprehensive list of acceptable coursework, please refer to section 119.23 of the administrative rules. Courses not listed in the rules may be submitted for consideration of acceptance by the department.

Courses considered not acceptable include: anthropology, archaeology, astronomy, education, geography, government, history, kinesiology, languages, physical education, psychology, and sociology.

Experience Requirements

You must have at least two years of full-time experience in the fields of consumer health, environmental health, or sanitation. Regularly assigned duties must have included consumer health, environmental health, or sanitation.

Experience requirements must be documented on a Sanitarian Experience Verification Form (PDF).

If you meet the experience requirements, it is not necessary to have previously held a "sanitarian in training" registration.

National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) Certification

if you are certified by the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist/Registered Sanitarian (REHS/RS), you must include a copy of your certificate.

Application and Fee

Submit a completed application form (Apply Online, or see Registered Sanitarian Application PDF) along with the application fee of $130.

Examination

Upon TDLR approval of eligibility, you will receive an email confirmation from our third-party vendor, PSI, with instructions for scheduling an appointment to take the registered sanitarian examination.

Applicants with Criminal Convictions
