The good, the bad and the truly offal

Meaty smoothies | Fastidious cats | Placing political bets | The gristle in Labour’s manifesto

The Meatfluencer’s smoothie, which includes powdered offal, is not as much of a novelty as it might appear (Report, 9 June). The sadly missed cookery writer Jane Grigson noted in her book Good Things that a gâteau de Pithiviers feuilleté – a sweet almond mixture in a puff pastry case – was traditionally enhanced by the addition of a roasted and minced pig’s kidney. I don’t know whether such an addition might also benefit a smoothie.

Harriet Meyer’s cats must be much more cooperative than the felines I have had over the years (Deals on food and homemade toys: seven ways to cut the cost of cat ownership, 12 June). Shifting them on to cheaper food? Good luck with that! They even balk at a change in litter and it needs to be gradually mixed in with their old supply or they won’t use it.

I see a Tory MP has placed a bet on the date of the general election (Bookmakers told to find all substantial bets on July poll after Sunak aide’s ‘flutter’, 13 June). There is no mention in your report of the MP in question, or any other Tory MP, placing a bet on the Tories winning the election. I wonder why?

The Labour manifesto launch may be the least enticing promotion since the TV adverts of the 70s for Yeoman Pie Filling that promised: “No lumps of fat or gristle – guaranteed”.
