Leaders from our region react to shooting at Trump rally

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - After former President Donald Trump and rallygoers were hit by apparent gunfire at an event in Butler, Pennsylvania, Saturday evening, leaders in our region released statements reacting to the violence.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, wrote on X: “Political violence is absolutely unacceptable. I wish Donald Trump, and anyone else who may have been hurt, a speedy recovery.”

Sen. Peter Welch, D-Vermont, released the following statement: “I am thankful former President Trump is safe, and I am appreciative of the Secret Service and law enforcement who responded so quickly. This is a horrifying moment for our democracy. We must condemn violence always, it is never acceptable.

“Details of this incident are emerging and I am closely monitoring the situation. My prayers and hope for a full recovery go out to former President Trump, and anyone who was harmed at his rally in Pennsylvania [Saturday.]”

Rep. Becca Balint, D-Vermont, posted to X: “I’m shocked, saddened and deeply concerned about the violence that took place at the Trump rally yesterday. I unequivocally condemn political violence of any kind. My thoughts are with the victims and their families.”

New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y. 21st District, said in a statement: “Please pray for President Trump, his family, and all of the patriots at today’s rally in Pennsylvania. The American people stand strongly with President Trump.”

Gov. Phil Scott, R-Vermont, made this statement on X in response: “Our thoughts are with former President Trump and his family following today’s shooting. America cannot be a country where we tolerate political violence, of any kind.”
