Cadets have the opportunity to participate in a number of academically oriented internship experiences (AIADs) - both domestically and abroad. From government offices, to private companies, to global non-profit organizations, cadets can apply their academic and leadership skills in an immersive environment, broadening their experience and deepening their understanding - allowing them to become more well-rounded leaders of character.  Cadets also have the opportunity to engage in internships that focus on military training (MIADs) and physical development (PIADs).

Academic Individual Advanced Development

As part of the Academic Individual Advanced Development (AIAD) program, Academic Departments provide internship and immersion opportunities every Spring and Summer that vary between one to six weeks in length. Cadets travel the country and the world, gaining new and deeper insights through experiential learning and applied research. Cadets can contact their Department Academic Counselor or department’s corresponding center or institute for more information on the diverse enrichment experiences over the academic year and summer.

Military Individual Advanced Development

USMA’s Military Individual Advanced Development (MIAD) program allows cadets the opportunity to participate in military training both in the US and overseas with foreign military units. MIADs typically last between two to four weeks during the summer academic break and include airborne school; the air assault course; US Army HALO, SERE or Combat Diver courses, Brazilian, Chilean, or Georgian mountain school; French Commando school, or the US Army jungle school in Hawaii. Cadets are selected based on a combination of cadet suitability, military scores, and language ability.

Physical Individual Advanced Development

PIAD opportunities provide a means to enrich the experience of the baseline Physical Program at USMA.  Eligible cadets can explore the advanced Sport Development PAID -  designed for those with an interest in total fitness, adventure sports, and a SCUBA diving experience.  Cadets can also apply to participate in the Outer Limits/Mountain Leader PIAD  - an opportunity to develop sound mountaineering skills while also exploring their mental and physiological limits.
