 Comment Both alphabet and script is permitted for writing system (P282) but for names it seems to be customary to specify the script. I am guessing this is because names tend to be used in many countries that share the same script. See for instance Hansen (Q2712367) and Mariya (Q39897333). Wikimail limit

Hi, since yesterday I am notifying the winners of the Wikidata competition Coordinate Me. I did so on their talk pages and I am trying to contact them through Wikimail, to talk about how they can receive their prizes. There are 30 winners. 21 of them I could send an email with "Email this user" yesterday but then this tool got blocked for me (to avoid spamming). The block is active for more than 12 hours now. Hi. If the block is imposed by the software then administrators can't do anything about it. Have you considered telling the users on their talk pages to email you instead? A block shouldn't trigger if you don't use the Special-page for emails. Infrastruktur (talk) 17:31, 5 July 2024 (UTC)
I see. On de.wikipedia the limit was lifted for my account a while ago - must have been done by a bureaucrat or similar. Anyway, after 24 hours the ban was over and I could send the rest of the Wikimails in late evening (CET). Using the wiki email function is really helpful in cases like this. I just checked the user groups, I do not see anything about the limit of e-mails sent. I also do not see any active blocks on your account. Yes, @FlyingAce, there has been a relatively recent change in the administrative division of El Salvador. Thank you for confirming this. I will search for reference(s) to add to the statements.
However, the fact that a statement is no longer true is not a justification for its removal. The qualifiers start time and end time, along with preferred rank, are used to state the currently valid or most recent value(s). A deprecated rank indicates that a claim was always erroneous or never known to be true, and that may or may not be applicable to these items.
Also, most or all of the values of contains the administrative territorial entity (P150) (the statements which the editor(s) removed and then repeatedly reverted without explanation, apparently both logged in and anonymously) contain the inverse value of located in the administrative territorial entity (P131), so these items would need to be updated, as well. Additionally, unrelated statements were removed multiple times. For example, the value for elevation above sea level (P2044), was removed on 19 April 2023 and 8 July 2024, by the editor. -- DCflyer* (talk) 19:38, 9 July 2024 (UTC)

I'm not understanding Croatian but edits like this and that edit + vandalism on other projects let me strongly believe that these edits are vandalism. If a native Croatian speaker thinks that some of the changes are still useful, they can feel free to restore this user's versions. Process Question: Proposals to Make Changes to Existing Properties

I understand that there is a process in place for proposing new properties in Wikidata. If a user wants to propose changes to existing properties, such as adjustments to allowed values, additions of property constraints, or changes to data types, is there a process in place for this as well? I was planning to do this by putting a detailed proposal (as well as an implementation and data cleanup plan) in the Project Chat, waiting for a period of time (would a week be sufficient?), and then going ahead with the changes if/when something close to consensus is reached. I am not a property creator, however, and wanted to check in to make sure I wasn't going to be going against Wikidata established practices beforehand. (1) Also start a discussion - at least link to the project chat proposal - on the property talk page
(2) ping people who have been involved - those who have edited the property, and those who discussed its creation on its property proposal page.

Disruption: non-standard additions

Greetings,

Currently I'm tracking some disruption of limited scope. There is a new editor who's adding non-standard aliases, names, descriptions to certain obscure items.

The subject matter appears to be Polish-American Catholic clerics. I'm unsure why the geolocation is going all over the place; perhaps this user has resorted to proxies. No communication was established with the user account, but today they have been apparently editing while logged out.

Also, this may be a random coincidence, but I feel that it may be worth mentioning here and now: the Wikipedia interface (Wikidata, in particular) has just notified me that someone has unsuccessfully attempted to log in to my account, multiple times, just at exactly the same time my edits were reverted by the above IP editor.

There are a few aspects that concern me here. @باسم has been actively editing but hasn't weighed in here, as the original blocker. @Soufiyouns appears to have sent email to at least one editor who's not an administrator, and can't, therefore, unblock anyone. Soufiyouns hasn't responded on their User talk page, either, despite retaining access to write there. @The Squirrel Conspiracy has received no support for the action in question, but hasn't modified the block to restore email access to this user. I suppose it's a moot point, as the block expires in a few hours, but in principle, I see no reason that email access should've been revoked. While it's "preferred" to request unblocks out in the open, it's not mandatory anywhere that I've seen, and Wikidata has no policy about this, so hopefully, admins can WD:AGF here. Because it seems to me that, before and during this block, Soufiyouns has been making use of the User talk page to calmly and rationally discuss the issues with the blocking admin. From some time ago, several IPs are vandalizing an amount of entries about royals, changing deliberately the labels and descriptions in English and some other languages (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) without obtaining any consensus for doing that, and removing deliberately statements (6, 7 or 8), and other major modifications. This is not the first time they do this class of long-term editions. See User talk:Epìdosis/Archive/2024#Protection requests per vandalism for a similar previous case (@Epìdosis, @Hjart).

I restored the entries to their stable versions, but it is known that some of those IPs come back for restore their versions (more information at the previous discussion at Epìdosis talk page). Editors violating OR policy and ignoring discussion at Q6495391

There are several editors who appear to be both gatekeeping me from removing incorrect linking to Q6495391 and ignoring attempts at discission.

People are effectively engaging in original research, which is clearly a violation of policy.

Why on earth would you protect the item with the problematic content intact? The item is clearly violating basic policy by making demonstrably, easily verifiable errors.
Most of the items are either not using the same terminology "late modern" or aren't even referring to the same timespan (20th century until now rather than c. 1800 until now). Not a single established user has lifted a finger to actually help solve the conflict or even tried to reply to the factual issues involved.
The behavior here is ungenerous and in my view clearly obstructive. People are not taking the issue seriously and appear to favor simply grandfathering unsourced claims rather than allow for perfectly normal corrections, as is the normal standard for all Wikimedia projects. At a minimum, calling these "notable works" is inaccurate. Are you suggesting that the individual items like gasocrine signaling (Q127038535) should be deleted or are just crankery? As it stands now, I'm not seeing any of the claims at Savani Anbalagan (Q59657831) being actually problematic except for the official website, which I fixed with an undo because it seems like that was just a typo from the beginning. I am not in the position to reliably judge whether they are crankery or not. I wanted to point out that these concepts (unlike some others in this field) are new to me and on the first sight they seem like an eager scientist pushing hard for their hypotheses to gain ground. In my opinion we should only have items on scientific topics that have been discussed in reliable secondary sources independent from the researcher. I can review the latter, but User:Suglo20 had hundreds of merges that might take many days to resolve. This is a "duplicate" of the problem we had last month with another new Wikidata user - Wikidata:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive/2024/06#Please revert June 20 edits by User:Jephtah Ogyefo Acquah. The error rate there was close to 50%, so I think it would be easiest here if User:Suglo20's were just all reverted. BTW I had a similar problem recently with Nkpelawuni (talk • contribs • deleted contribs • logs • filter log • block user • block log • SUL (for IP: GUC)); the problem mainly involved the "Merge items" game; I blocked the account once for 1 day and checked all the merges (nearly all were wrong); then there were a bulk of new wrong merges, so I blocked the account for 1 week and chacked all the new merges (nearly all wrong as the previous time). I fear somehow all of these account could be connected; maybe the same person creating a new one after the previous is blocked; it could be useful a look by the checkusers IMHO. Hmm, I had been assuming this was somehow just new Wikidata users trying to be helpful. I've had interactions with some of those who've used the game in the past (via their talk pages or undo comments) and they don't seem to act like a LTA person, but I haven't had much interaction with those types so maybe I just don't know. In any case I think there's a fundamental problem here of calling merges in Wikidata a "game" - merges need to be thought through carefully, they have significant follow-on consequences (changing items that refer to them) that become very hard to reverse after a week or so. As part of Gzen92's effort to snipe that QID, they (and their bot User:Gzen92Bot) created a bunch of additional items. For each failed attempt at a QID, they redirected them to Unterlinden monastery (Q15117344). I believe many other of the redirects were failed bot runs. Q15117344 has at least 400 redirects to it. If you look at their edit history, they attempted to capture Q128000000 today, and failed. I believe this kind of editing, creating mostly empty items for the purpose of sniping a QID and not managing their bot correctly, is a violation of Wikimedia policies and deserves some kind of sanction.  Comment There is no explicit rule against canvassing, but I believe it is followed de facto. I would say it's more serious if it happens in a request for permissions or a policy vote. The question is then if it becomes spammy and disruptive. I would say that asking unrelated users on their talk page to vote in support is not something we would want. It also calls into question the validity of the consensus, which arguably does harm to the process. But to be fair, a number of property proposals would fly under the radar these days if we didn't poke people somehow. I don't think anyone would mind if you used Template:Ping project or Wikidata:Project chat or any of its localized pages for this. I then contacted the user Luca.favorido who is active on lexemes in Italian, and he thanked me for notifying him about it and strongly supported this proposal which was then created (Italian-English Dictionary ID (P12885)) and will be very useful to him in his work. Wikipedia has a strict policy on BLPs (biographies of living persons), and not including original research or synthesizing content from sources ("Do not combine material from multiple sources to state or imply a conclusion not explicitly stated by any of the sources"). The actress does not state in the link that was present that she is a member of any party. Endorsing a political candidate does not automatically make someone a member of the candidate's party. Moreover, given TM's sidestepping here, I'd like to stress that this report isn't a content dispute, it is about the user repeatedly and knowingly re-adding a porn entry and a non-existent X profile. Wikidata introduced the new "mul" language code today, which can be used to specify a default value for an item. This works nicely for proper names (people, trademarks, organizations, product names, etc), where the name is shared across multiple languages. By specifying the default, we no longer need to manually duplicate it across dozens (and in some cases, hundreds) of languages. Iamcarbon (talk) 06:14, 30 July 2024 (UTC)

Totally agree. These deletions need summaries. I've paused deleting any additional labels until I can make sure they are included, and make sure the community is in support of consolidating duplicated labels where the native label is used across languages (Astroids, Humans, Trademarks, etc).
Going to continue to watch the mul discussions of the next week and hope to continue to get feedback on the batch of changes I've made today.
I've also noticed, that by simplifying the label sets -- it makes them super easy to review and spot errors / vandalism. I've caught a handful of errors / spam during this process.
It also looks like these simplifications may help the infrastructure team improve the scalability of the query service! Super excited to see this rollout. Iamcarbon (talk) 07:11, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
@Iamcarbon, Mykhal: the 'mul' code is not fully available yet. Please stop deleting labels until at least the week of August 12.
