PADUCAH — A Carbondale, Illinois, native now living in Los Angeles will participate in the Paducah Artist in Residence Program through Tuesday, July 9. PAA residency artists temporarily live in downtown Paducah to provide workshops, collaborations, lectures and exhibitions.

"I spent a lot of time here [in Paducah] growing up but never really got the chance really to interact with the artist's community," Ginsburg said. "I've always been really interested in what Paducah has to offer with its artists, but this is the first time that I've gotten to really be on the ground, meet people, see what the community has to offer and it's a really really awesome place."

A news release from the PAA said that Ginsburg, who performs professionally in orchestral, chamber, and new music ensembles throughout the U.S. and Italy, is a faculty member at South Pasadena Arts & Music Academy in California. His experience includes teaching private instrumental, music theory, composition, piano, voice, and brass instruments lessons to kindergarten through adults. He has tutored music theory and aural an transcription skills to postgraduate students.

"The residency is definitely making me see Paducah on a different level. Growing up in southern Illinois, I’ve been coming to Paducah my whole life and have always been aware of the artist community, but until now had no idea how vibrant, collaborative, and welcoming it could be," Ginsburg said. "In a time where arts funding and support — especially in rural places — is at an all-time struggle, I think Paducah is a great example of how rural artists can thrive together and help make a livable city."

Ginsburg's presentations are free and open to the public. His presentations for the weekend are as follows:

Saturday, July 6

  • 1 to 2 p.m. — Ambient improvised set at the PAPA Gallery, 124 Broadway Street.
  • 3:30 p.m. — Storefront Pop up Concert at Bricolage Art Collective, 107 Market House Square.

Sunday, July 7

  • Time TBD — Ginsburg will present the in-progress version of Sound Map of Paducah. Artists, musicians and scientists alike use field recording — the use of microphones to record the sounds of a particular room, scene or outdoor environment — to reveal the complex world of sounds hidden by the “naked” ear. In an effort to explore Paducah’s unique character and its unique sonic profile, Ginsburg will record and assemble a sound map of historically-significant spaces in Paducah, which will eventually be available as a publicly-accessible online audio-visual resource.
