Bernie is extremely friendly, very efficient, and clearly takes pride in his work. We used him to upgrade an irrigation system so we could program two different zones that need different watering amounts. The actual spigot system he set up looks like something out of Wonka factory, which I mean as a compliment. Elegant, gold - just super cool looking. He got the whole job done in a day, with just a quick return visit to add an optional mechanism I asked for. He let me record the entire walk through of how things work for my records and he was extremely generous with his time and insights. He even gave me some tips on my roses. He's extremely punctual and efficient. Great experience working with him!

Bernie came to my garden today and fixed a couple of problem areas in my irrigation system. Had some good suggestions about getting the water to the areas for new plantings. Very nice, great communication skikda and a wealth of knowledge. Didn't try to talk me into a new system. Just helped with the existing set up, which is what I wanted.

Bernie and team have looked after my yard for almost 10 years. Thoroughly impressed.

Bernie and team did a great job on our yard and front of house and is a constant help and advice on all sorts of issues whenever we call. I'm writing this review as a counter point to the weird one star reviews on yelp that seem to carry some bitterness or bad vibes.

First, dirty hoe - its funny, but more so if you spend 1 second with Bernie (I remember: Detroit born, horticulture educated, long term bike courier and business owner) - zero misogynist vibes, a family man of 2 kids and a strong working wife in the legal profession.

Second, busy business - I'm sure these guys are swamped. I simply leave a message when I need to schedule a visit or advice and Bernie gets back to me within a day or two. I've often forgotten about the call and happy to be chased back on getting an appointment in.

Third, great service! Dirty Hoe as a team know their stuff - highly recommend.

Dirty Hoe Landscaping are best contractors for planting and designs.These guys transformed my outdoor terrace into a fabulous getaway with large plants/trees and flowers. I have received tons of compliments on the space and owe it all to these guys. I am looking forward to having him back this summer for maintenance and some expansion of trees and plans. Also, he and his team were the ultimate professionals - not a spec of dirt was left behind. The staff in my building even noted that they were super impressed with him. If you searching for your plantings then contact these guys, really they are valuable.

Massively disappointed in their work.
We spent a lot of money to get an irrigation system installed.
But it never worked right.
It seemed like our smaller plants were constantly overflowing, but the larger trees were dry. it caused us enough frustration that we asked Bernie to come out and review the system and trouble shoot it.
He came out and made some adjustments, but the problems continued.

We then went to Urban Farmer Store (they rock), and they spent a good half hour educating us on irrigation systems and explained how to fix the issues.
We replaced the plugs with emitters that were more appropriate to the size pot, and it's a lot better now.

It pains me to write this review, but it's unfair to spend this kind of money and then have to go through this kind of hassle and also stress out the plants you've spent a lot of money and care on.

I must admit that anybody who came up with this name for their business was alright by me and I was ready to hire them on the name alone.

However, being a conscientious person, I asked them to be all proper and give me a bid. The first part I liked was that Bernie totally helped me get over my shame at letting a fabulous little SF backyard turn into an overgrown, damp & weedy eyesore.

Bernie and his crew did such an amazing job, they did exactly what I wanted, educated me on everything I have in this backyard of mine, never once tried to sell me on why I would need their services in order to maintain its good looks -- in fact, shared some tips on how I could go about doing things myself.

As Bernie left, while I "oohed" and "ahhed" about my restored garden, he said their goal was to make the backyard or garden a person's "favorite room in the house." Well, they completely succeeded with me.

Professional, courteous, on time, on budget, knowledgeable: I will definitely hire them again and recommend them to anyone needing a little backyard magic.

Bottomline: Dirty Hoe landscaping bunch really know where it's at. Reliable, got the job done, exceeded expectations, dependable, on budget.

I called Bernie after reading a couple of yelp reviews. After a couple back and forths, he in came in and gave me a bid on my backyard. My backyard, really isn't a backyard, it's a mess. A jade plant as large as a small buffalo, heavy tree branches bending over so far they were a hazard, weeds so deep who knew what was back there, super tall trees, huge rotten planters..... Literally, it had been at least 5 years since anyone had ventured into the backyard beyond the grill placed 2 feet in.

During his initial look at the backyard, Bernie was great, knowledgable, touched on areas to consider that other people hadn't and also gave the smart recommendation to do my backyard in stages so I could have a better understanding about the space and what i wanted. No pressure and he gave me different options to choose from. Little did i know he is also a arborist. The quote he gave was reasonable so we went with him.

He showed up on time ....And the job was amazing. As in... i can't believe it, it must be magic. Him and his team went above and beyond to clear out our backyard. It went from a cramped, dark space to a large light filled area. I don't know how they did it in an afternoon. They did everything from trimming high tree branches to cutting the ivy off the fence to hauling out debris (which i later learned included old wood and a huge mirror?? random). It looks beautiful.

Highly recommended. Can't wait to see what happens with stage 2!!

Bernie is great. He explained that we actually had a water monitor as part of our sprinkler system that wasn't hooked up, and he set it up for us which has been great -- it doesn't water when it has been raining... Nice guy. Much appreciate his careful work.
