Visited Ho Yuen Cafe and was delighted with the food that I ordered. Tried their buns of the month, which is their Kaya Toast and Pineapple Bun with Real pineapples.
Kaya Toast was exceptional! The coconutty taste with a fat slab of butter was smooth paired with light and super soft bread, which made it a perfect combo.
The pineapple bun with real pineapple was very unique as it was filled with pineapple chunks in cream mixture. The pineapple definitely makes it very refreshing. I don't believe anywhere offers this.
The star of the show was the salted egg yolk deep fried chicken! The richness of the egg yolk and the crunchiness of the chicken wings was an absolute delight to eat. Highly recommendHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 23, 2024
I want to put it out there that as someone who has loved pineapple buns her entire life, Ho Yuen Cafe absolutely BLEW ME AWAY. My boyfriend and I came here for breakfast on the morning we were set to leave Vancouver - it's conveniently located near the airport and we were craving a good Asian breakfast. THIS IS THE BEST HONG KONG STYLE CAFE I HAVE EVER BEEN TO, AND I'LL STAND ON THAT. The service was fantastic - one of the staff (I want to guess that she's the manager since she was directing many other employees) greeted us, consistently checked on us, and had staff communicate with us throughout the the meal. It was a busy morning with a packed cafe, so I greatly appreciated the level of attention given! We were seated immediately and ordered the following:
- Baked tomato sauce pork chop rice: THIS WAS A SOLID 5/5! It was baked in a pan, served fresh, and tasted so much more flavorful than other versions I've had at locations in California.
- Satay beef in instant noodles: My boyfriend got this and it was light and delicious! The noodles were thin and the broth wasn't overwhelming!
- Hk coffee iced: We both ordered iced HK coffees and I was impressed that it was larger than most places I get the drink from! The one here was creamy, light, and tasty!
- Pineapple bun with salted butter and eggs: A SUPERSTAR RIGHT HERE, 5/5! This one was amazingly soft, fluffy, and delicious! I still can't get this treat out of my head! It's the best pineapple bun I've ever had and its texture went so well with the eggs and salted butter! (This was so good we ended up buying the three pack mini pineapple buns to take back to California)!
I am so impressed with Ho Yuen in so many ways. Both my boyfriend and I loved the quality, the service, and the affordable prices of this amazing HK style cafe and plan on making stops here whenever we drop by Vancouver!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 9, 2024
A new cha chaan teng has recently opened in Richmond! I could never resist the Hong Kong style comfort food, so I'm super excited to try it out! Since this cafe is newly opened and it's a weekend, so I expected it would be busy. I went there right when they opened but turns out we were the only one there LOL. The place starts to get busy when it's around 10:00am, so to anyone who wants to avoid the crowd, get there before 10:00am!
Satay beef instant noodles is my go-to breakfast when it comes cha chaan teng. I also substitute the toast that came with the meal set with a pineapple bun. The satay beef instant noodles was really good, probably one of the best I've had in Vancouver. It's super flavorful and I think the portion size was perfect for me. The pineapple bun is soft and theres a nice crunch on top. However the yuenyueng was just so so, the coffee was not strong enough and I think they added too much milk. We also ordered the luncheon meat tomato macaroni, I think it was fine, I much preferred the satay beef instant noodles. Last but not least we had the cookie egg tart, I mean how can you not get one when you are at a cha chaan teng? The egg tart was delicious, the cookie crust was buttery and flaky. I absolutely loved the filling, the egg flavor is so strong and it has the perfect texture.
Overall I think the food here is ok, I think I still prefer Cha Kee (Aberdeen). If I were to come back again I would only come back for the satay beef noodles and the egg tart! This cafe is located literally in the middle of nowhere where but still worth a try!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1 - Apr 1, 2024
Finally had to time to come to the highly anticipated Ho Yuen Cafe opened in south Vancouver, my hood! I have to say we will come back to give it another try as the bbq noodle soup needed more flavour. My hubby also said the braised beef was bland. However the pineapple bun with salted butter is the star! It was warm and fresh, the way it should be.
We came early when they opened so we didn't need to wait for a table. After we were done there were about 10 people waiting outside. The restaurant is quite small but the table distance is good for staff to move around.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 2 - O W.Fairview, Vancouver, Canada01Aug 26, 2024
Ho Yuen Cafe was a terrible experience. Waitress was so focused on making sure she was left a tip. She made a point of coming to the table to let us know that the tip was not included in the bill. It was such a negative experience. The food is just so so and it is not great value

Tried this place today after all the social media hype. Let's just say it's all hype. The restaurant isn't big and fills up fast. Staff are friendly. We ordered the macaroni and ham soup and satay beef with instant noodle set meals. They were pretty good tasting. We substituted the toast with pineapple buns. Tried the pineapple bun with salted butter. It didn't taste fresh, not was it hot or warm. The crust fell apart upon picking up the bun. Generally not a good sign or quality bun when that happens. Kitchen staff are pretty slow and food takes forever to come out. The scrambled eggs weren't great. Prices are pretty expensive for what you get. Two meals was $40 for 2 people. Probably won't be back. Location is in a very strange industrial area. Parking is ample on the street.

Good selection of food including plenty of buns - especially the coveted pineapple buns !

will probably update once i come back after soft opening and there's more options available on the menu.
quick notes:
cha siu rice bowl can take up to 20-30 min to prepare possibly due to the demand. cha siu was amazing with a good thickness and bite and crispy char. Paired with broken rice?
pineapple bun with butter was superb and i heard that there's a chocolate one too with a lava inner.
egg tarts held together really well, perfectly balanced flavor and they were fresh out of the oven!
satay instant noodle was a little salty for our tastes but generally flavorful and had tender meat
no iced lemon tea or hk milk tea at the moment until the end of jan when the tea base arrives

Overall very solid place for egg tart and pineapple bun. They have pre packaged mini pineapple bun, good if you are in a rush. Pineapple buns are both pre packaged (room temperature) or you can order a warm one from the display case. Mini pineapple bun topping is the more crispy type, if you bite you won't clearly see your teeth mark. I prefer this type but I felt like the dough was not as soft as other places.
Egg tart is cookie crust and $2 per piece. I like cookie crust over flaky crust, but I think the filling is not the no. 1 filling. However, I didn't eat it while it was hot so I will need to come back and give Ho Yuen a fair chance. If you *really* prefer cookie crust over flaky crust this is probably still best spot for it.
There is a medium size free parking lot in the strip mall.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Tiger T.Downtown, Vancouver, Canada233350Jul 5, 2024
Went early in the morning just when they opened. The place is busy and it's a nice quiet HK style respectful breakfast spot. Service very tentative very friendly and efficient. Food comes out hot and fast and delicious. I have tried the saute beef with spaghetti noodles pineapple bun with scrambled egg, beef ginger with vermicelli, Homemade BBQ with macaroni, tomato and spam with macaroni. So I basically tried all their noodle soups except two which I will add to my check off list the next time I'm there. Overall, I enjoyed this place. I enjoy their food and the service they provide.
